Job description

Maryland Center for Legal Assistance (MCLA)

expands access to justice by providing free, compassionate, innovative, and high-quality legal services. Through comprehensive legal advice, education, and collaboration with community partners, we empower all people, regardless of means or background, to navigate the civil legal system with confidence.

MCLA, through a contract with the Maryland Judiciary, operates Court Help Centers throughout Maryland to provide in-person and remote legal advice to civil litigants via phone, chat, email, and video conference. The Help Centers deal with a wide range of civil legal matters, including landlord-tenant, consumer matters such as debt collection and credit card cases, child support, and criminal record expungements to remove barriers to obtaining housing, employment, and child custody.

MCLA announces an immediate opening for a full-time PM Supervising Attorney position for qualified applicants supporting the Remote Services Center (RSC) in Annapolis, MD. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to handle a broad range of duties in a timely and efficient manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the daily work of RSC staff attorneys, including attorneys providing legal advice through phone and online chat services. Provide ongoing coaching, support, and formal and informal feedback to promote high-quality legal services and strong customer service.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the other RSC Supervisor, the Deputy Director for Remote Services, and the broader supervisory team on hiring, onboarding, trainings, scheduling, quality assurance, data reporting, workflow management, and development of internal resources.

  • Provide brief legal advice and information to self-represented litigants, including drafting pleadings and motions, preparing litigants for court, and assisting with court forms.

  • Assist litigants with a broad range of Maryland civil legal issues, including landlord-tenant matters, civil claims, expungement and shielding, consumer issues, return of property, domestic violence/peace orders, family law, and foreclosure.

  • Identify operational challenges and opportunities for improvement and contribute to the ongoing development of Remote Services Center practices, workflows, and resources.

  • Be able to support MCLA’s other offices and service delivery models as needed.

  • Primary schedule is 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Position may occasionally require coverage outside of scheduled hours and availability for supervisory issues as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Maryland.

  • At least three years of litigation or relevant legal services experience, including demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience.

  • Strong understanding of MCLA’s brief advice model and ability to effectively balance supervisory responsibilities with direct client service in a high-volume environment.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple urgent issues simultaneously while exercising sound judgment and maintaining professionalism.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff with different experience levels, communication styles, and support needs.

  • Flexible, collaborative, and solution-oriented team member who is open to change and comfortable helping implement new processes and ideas.

  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal concepts in plain language and effectively assist litigants who may be confused, overwhelmed, or in crisis.

  • Ability to conduct efficient legal research and quickly become familiar with unfamiliar areas of law.

  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.

Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $96,000.00 - $110,000.00. In addition, MLA provides employees with a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life insurance, a 401(k)-retirement plan, 2 weeks paid time off, paid sick leave, 14 annual paid holidays, and more.
