Job summary

American Water is seeking a Superintendent of Water Quality & Environmental Compliance to manage day-to-day environmental and water quality compliance across multiple facilities. The role provides technical support on water quality, treatment, permitting, and regulatory issues, ensuring company policy is implemented.

You will supervise laboratory procedures, maintain accreditations, and lead safety and compliance initiatives while coordinating with regulators and internal teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering; equivalent experience may be considered.
• 5+ years’ experience with a bachelor’s degree or 8+ years without a bachelor’s in wastewater treatment.
• Experience in utility operations, customer service, or project management.
• 2+ years’ experience in a team lead capacity or leading state-wide projects.
• 2+ years of analytical experience in an accredited environmental laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Validate accuracy and timeliness of compliance reporting; dual validation before regulators.

Job Title: Superintendent, Water Quality & Environmental Compliance

Primary Role

The Superintendent, Water Quality and Environmental Compliance is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day compliance management of multiple operations to continually meet all environmental and water quality requirements. Provides technical support on water quality, treatment, permitting, laboratory management, and regulatory compliance issues. Ensures Company policy on water quality and related environmental matters is implemented.

Key Accountabilities

• Ensure water treatment and other activities at assigned facilities are completed in accordance with permit conditions and applicable regulatory requirements, including routine monitoring and reporting requirements.
• Validate that compliance reporting across programs is accurate, timely and in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Perform dual validation of compliance reports prior to submission to the regulators.
• Assist local, State, and Federal regulatory agencies during inspections.
• Oversee administration of Industrial Pretreatment Program and FOG Program
• Respond to Water Quality and environmental compliance problems, taking appropriate corrective action including documentation to advise management.
• Ensure that customer complaints or inquiries are properly addressed to attempt to resolve any issues. Reports on problems and issues regarding Water Quality and standards.
• Provide technical guidance to operations staff in dealing with water quality and environmental issues. Recommends treatment and procedures for maintaining compliance with water quality standards.
• Ensure policies, programs, standards of performance and approved objectives related to water quality and environmental compliance are implemented at assigned facilities.
• Maintain strong working relationships with environmental regulators.
• Assist with training plant operating staff, field services and other water quality and environmental personnel in water quality and environmental regulatory requirements, chemical handling practices and environmental initiatives.
• Oversee plant and environmental laboratory procedures for testing and sampling to ensure Company and regulatory requirements are met.
• Maintain accreditation at an accredited environmental laboratory including laboratory supervisor requirements.
• Supervises direct workforce to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and laboratory procedures are maintained which may include accreditation/certification for specialized parameters.
• Conduct special projects and prepare reports.

Knowledge/Skills

• Knowledge of federal and state environmental standards and regulations and understanding of current environmental legislation related to water system operations.
• Strong working knowledge of water and/or wastewater treatment, and thorough knowledge of water quality and environmental regulations.
• Strong to excellent working knowledge of all Federal, State, and local requirements for Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention regulations
• In-depth knowledge of Microsoft office suite applications including MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint and email management systems (MS Outlook).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations).
• Effective people management skills (e.g., planning, organizing, recruiting, controlling, and leading individual staff and teams).

Experience/Education

• Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental science, engineering or equivalent field preferred. Operator License and relevant work experience in lieu of degree may be considered.
• 5+ years’ experience with a bachelor’s degree or 8+ years’ experience without a bachelor’s degree in wastewater treatment or water utility operations.
• Experience in utility operations, customer service, or project management roles.
• 2+ years’ experience in a team lead capacity or leading state-wide projects preferred
• 2+ years of analytical experience in an accredited environmental laboratory

Licenses/Certifications

• Valid Driver’s License
• DEP Wastewater Operator License is required without a bachelor’s degree

Schedule/Work Environment

• Monday - Friday 7am - 3:30pm (core hours)
• Indoor environment within a wastewater treatment plant and laboratory
• Local and occasional regional travel, as needed
