Centerra Gold invites an experienced Tailings Superintendent to join Thompson Creek Mine in Challis, Idaho. You will lead tailings operations, ensure safe, compliant storage, and collaborate with engineering, operations and regulators to optimize performance.

About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for an Superintendent, Tailings to join our Thompson Creek team.

The Tailings Superintendent is responsible for providing leadership, technical oversight, and operational direction for all tailings storage and management activities at the mine site. Reporting to the Manager, Mill, this position is accountable for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation, monitoring, maintenance, and ongoing management of the Tailings Storage Facility.

The Tailings Superintendent provides leadership to the tailings operations team and works closely with Mine Operations, Mill Operations, Maintenance, Environmental, Engineering, and external technical specialists to ensure tailings are managed in accordance with the site’s operational requirements, design criteria, applicable regulations, permits, and company standards.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for tailings operations, including deposition, water management, pumping, pipeline systems, and associated infrastructure.
  • Ensure the Tailings Storage Facility is operated, maintained, and monitored in accordance with approved design criteria, operating procedures, regulatory requirements, permits, and company standards.
  • Lead and develop the tailings operations team, including supervisors and operators, while promoting a strong culture of safety, environmental stewardship, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the development and execution of short- and long-term tailings operating plans in collaboration with site operations, engineering, and technical teams.
  • Coordinate tailings deposition and water management activities to support safe and efficient mill and mine operations.
  • Work closely with Engineers of Record, Independent Tailings Review Boards, consultants, and other external technical specialists as required.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing management of the site’s Tailings and applicable dam safety and governance requirements.
  • Review operational monitoring data and inspection findings and ensure appropriate actions are taken to address identified risks, trends, or deficiencies.
  • Ensure routine inspections, monitoring, maintenance, and surveillance activities are completed and appropriately documented.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning related to the Tailings Storage Facility.
  • Manage departmental budgets, workforce planning, operating costs, and resource requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the safety, reliability, efficiency, and environmental performance of tailings operations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable health and safety, environmental, mining, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support site-wide production and operational objectives.
  • Provide technical and operational input into capital projects, facility modifications, expansions, and closure planning.
  • Perform other duties and help as required.
About You

To qualify, the following skills and experiences are required:

  • Post-secondary education in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • A professional engineering designation or eligibility for registration would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 8–12 years of progressive experience in mining, tailings management, water management, or related heavy industrial operations.
  • Previous leadership experience in a tailings, mining, processing, or similar operational environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Tailings Storage Facility operations, tailings deposition, water management, monitoring, and associated infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with tailings management standards, dam safety requirements, regulatory obligations, and industry best practices.
  • Experience working in an open-pit mining environment is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and collaborate across technical and operational teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety and environmental stewardship.
