Job summary

Butler-Cohen Design + Build seeks an experienced construction superintendent to maintain a full-time on-site presence, enforcing safety culture and supervising field activities. You will coordinate subcontractors, track costs forWork performed, and ensure progress aligns with the project schedule and documents.

The role requires leading QA/QC processes, resolving field issues, and communicating clearly with all stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5–10+ years of construction management experience or a BA/BS plus 10+ years in construction.
  • Must have led at least one project valued at $5–10 million (prefer $10–20 million).
  • Experience in QA/QC methods, inspection, and enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain on-site supervision and coordination of subcontractors.
  • Keep cost records for work performed and materials supplied; manage material costs.
  • Enforce safety culture and ensure project safety compliance on site.
  • Ensure completion of the project within the schedule and contract documents.
  • Inspect workmanship for conformity to plans and specifications; coordinate with stakeholders.

Job description

Superintendents maintain a full-time on-site presence at the Project Site to guarantee our commitment to building the right way and by the most cost-effective, schedule-conscious means possible. They are responsible for implementing and enforcing Butler-Cohen’s safety culture on the project site, as well as continuous field supervision, coordination, completion of the Work, and site management. Other tasks include but are not limited to organization and coordination of Subcontractors, keeping cost records on Work performed and materials supplied, controlling costs in materials and wages, and exercising control over the rate of construction progress to ensure completion of the Project within the Project Schedule; inspecting or observing the Work to enforce conformity to the Contract Documents; and supervising trades, subcontractors, clerical staff, and other personnel employed in the construction of the Project.

Education Requirements

  • 5 - 10+ years of construction management experience, OR a combination of a BA/BS in a construction-related field plus construction management experience totaling 10+ years
  • Must have run at least one job of $5-10 million value or greater ($10-20 million preferred)
  • Preferred experience in ground-up new construction or heavy renovation projects, whether in a fully operational facility or not
  • Experience in QA/QC Methods, inspection, and enforcement.

Skills/Abilities Requirements

  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends.
  • Willingness to travel in the market and/or relocate based on project location.
  • Able to work in all elements of the outdoor environment, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Able to access the entire job site, including stairs, scaffolding, ladders, elevation changes, etc.
  • Can work in physical positions, including kneeling, sitting, standing, squatting, bending over, and more as the job requires.
  • Must be able to move, carry, or position items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to inspect field construction work for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Communicate clearly with the full spectrum of project stakeholders to achieve positive results.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and strategies for organizing all scopes, people, materials, tools, and equipment to manage the project successfully.
  • The ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with individuals at all company levels, including client representatives and subcontractors.
  • Must be able to work and perform duties with minimal supervision and have extensive problem-solving skills.
  • Must have basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Project Management software (Procore preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of all project documents, including specifications, plans, submittals, subcontracts, shop drawings, and any other project-specific documents.
  • Proficiency in electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and structural systems
  • Knowledge of local quality, safety, and health guidelines for construction job sites.
  • In-depth understanding of construction operations and processes.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and OSHA site visits.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to walk the site multiple times per day, including uneven surfaces such as sand, gravel, or compacted dirt.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders to access all areas of the jobsite, including roofs, mezzanines, and spaces above ceilings.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, and standing for extended periods are required to check framing layouts, concrete forms, and detailed fieldwork.
  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work on their feet for most of the workday without the need for extended rest periods.
  • Must be able to visually inspect small details and work elements at close range and at a distance.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and communicate clearly across noisy jobsite environments.
  • Must be physically capable of coordinating in the field with subcontractors, vendors, and inspectors throughout the day.

Working Conditions:

  • Work will occur in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Must be comfortable working independently without direct supervision during afternoons, early mornings, or weekends as project needs require.
  • May be exposed to high noise levels, dust, and other airborne particles; appropriate PPE must be worn.
  • Must be able to safely navigate active construction areas, including heavy equipment, scaffolding, and temporary structures.
