Job summary

ISC Hawaii seeks a seasoned Construction Superintendent to oversee field operations on multiple projects across Hawaii. You will supervise subcontractors, ensure safety, manage schedules, and maintain quality standards to deliver projects on time and within budget.

The ideal candidate has an engineering, CM, or architecture background, extensive field supervisory experience, STS certification or eligibility, and strong knowledge of OSHA, scheduling, expediting, and cost control.

Qualifications

  • 4 years as Assistant Superintendent or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive field supervisory construction experience.
  • STS Certification or achievment within six months of hire; active status preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand specifications for all trades; foreman/journeyman experience.
  • Knowledge of OSHA laws.
  • Knowledge of job scheduling, planning, expediting and cost control.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a sense of urgency.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in Safety Training Program and enforce safety procedures.
  • Verify subcontractor certificates of insurance.
  • Prepare and maintain CPM job schedule.
  • Develop Owner and Architect’s confidence.
  • Recruit, organize, train, direct and coordinate field construction team including subcontractor’s direct hire work.
  • Assure work quality - set standards for quality control.
  • Order materials and plan supply allotment to avoid ‘crisis’ buying.
  • Prepare necessary reports (e.g. time sheets, work orders, daily reports and invoice approval).
  • Document and complete all punchlists in a timely manner.
  • Review all drawings, specifications and subcontractor submittals.
  • Chair or attend pre-job conference, regular subcontractor meetings.
  • Perform start-up testing and turnover to Owner.
  • Document final close-out and Owner’s acceptance.
  • Perform manual work only in rare circumstances when exigent circumstances require it.
  • Ability to travel as required by management.
  • Ability to supervise multiple projects over a large geographic area as required by management.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements
  • Engineering, Construction Management or Architectural degree, or equivalent experience (4 years as Assistant Superintendent)
  • Extensive field construction experience at supervisory level
  • Current Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) Certification, or achievement of STS Certification within six months of hire, maintenance of active certification status
  • Working knowledge of all crafts (ability to read and understand specifications for all trades), and prior experience as foreman or journeyman in at least one trade, or project engineer
  • Knowledge of OSHA laws
  • Knowledge of job scheduling, planning, expediting and cost control
  • Ability in problem-solving
  • Strong sense of urgency
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Standard Hours: Superintendents work standard full-time hours from 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Superintendents must also be available outside these hours, as the job dictates.
  • Extended Hours: During critical phases of a project, such as deadlines or inspections, they may need to work additional hours, including evenings or weekends, to ensure project timelines are met. This will be per the discretion of the superintendent.
  • Field/Site Visits: Project Managers often need to visit job sites to oversee construction activities, which may require walking, climbing, and standing for extended periods. They may need to navigate uneven terrain or construction environments. They may also experience:
    • Occasional exposure to weather, vibration, dust, and fumes.
    • Requires frequent stooping/bending/crouching, reaching, handling, finger dexterity, sitting, standing, walking, and lifting 50 or more lbs.
    • Constant ability to see details at close range and at a distance, hear, and talk, and possess depth perception
    • Occasional climbing and carrying, proximity to moving mechanical parts, working in high exposed places
    • The noise intensity level is high
  • Safety Gear: When on construction sites, Project Managers are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety goggles, gloves, and high-visibility vests to ensure their safety.
