The Public Transit Operations Supervisor oversees daily front-line transit operations, including fixed-route bus, or paratransit services. This role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant transit service by monitoring real-time operations, supporting transit operators, responding to field incidents, and enforcing agency standards and federal regulations.

- Field & Dispatch Supervision: Monitor routes, schedules, and service adherence in real time; adjust schedules and re-route vehicles to minimize service disruptions using Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems.
- Incident & Emergency Management: Serve as the primary on-scene responder for accidents, vehicle breakdowns, passenger disruptions, and emergencies. Conduct initial investigations, secure scenes, gather evidence, and coordinate with emergency services.
- Operator Support & Evaluation: Monitor driver performance, conduct ride-a-longs, evaluate customer service delivery, and provide real-time coaching and constructive feedback. Assist with operator check-ins and dispatch assignments.
- Compliance & Safety: Enforce agency policies, local/state traffic laws, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, and Department of Transportation (DOT) safety standards. Administer post-accident and reasonable-suspicion drug/alcohol testing as required.
- Customer & Community Relations: Resolve operator and passenger conflicts on-site, assist passengers with special needs (including ADA compliance), and handle customer complaints professionally.
- Reporting & Administration: Prepare concise, accurate incident reports, operator performance evaluations, field logs, and safety audits within required deadlines.
- Assigns vehicles and drivers on daily bus and paratransit routes to balance vehicle use and ensure balanced operations. Schedule and assign extra trips as required.
- Coordinate vehicle servicing and repair with fleet to maintain scheduled operations.
- Assist bus drivers in the event of mechanical problems, route delays, and passenger-related challenges.
- Document customer questions and complaints Coordinate solution(s) and communicate with management, team members, and customers. Escalate complaints to Operations Superintendent when necessary.
- Collects and tracks data. This includes, but is not limited to route deviations, detours, on-time performance, missed trips, accidents, incidents, vehicle miles, deadhead miles, fuel usage, exhaust regeneration fluid, and passenger counts.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Constant exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and meeting the demands of an operating transit system with deadlines and schedules. May work indoors, sitting, with the ability to move at will, and to work in the field monitoring and reviewing transit activities. A computer keyboard is used for entering and retrieving data and preparing documents. May work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including cold, extreme heat, and rain when responding to accident scenes, operating buses, or when supervising or assisting transit drivers.
Note: Assignments include early morning, late evening, weekend and holiday work shifts and some overtime.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate or bachelor’s degree in business, Public Administration, Logistics, or Transportation Management preferred. Directly related experience may substitute for education.
Experience: Minimum 2 years of progressive experience in public transit operations or comparable leadership experience in similar field. Other leadership experience and/or training in supervision is desired.
Licenses and or Certification:
- Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License. A valid Utah Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and air brake endorsement must be obtained within 30 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
- No DUI or DWI convictions within prior twenty-four (24) months and no moving violations within twelve (12) months.
- Possess a current DOT Medical Card
Knowledge of:
- Basic supervisory principles and practices
- Familiar with local/state traffic laws, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, and Department of Transportation (DOT) safety standards.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suit. Cad/AVL, Google Apps and other software applications.
- Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals for various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
- Strong conflict resolution, crisis management, decision-making, and verbal/written communication skills. Proficiency with dispatch software, CAD/AVL tools, and mobile radios.
- Effective leadership, supervisory and motivational techniques
- Principles and practices of public relations and/or customer service
