Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin HS in New York is seeking Associate Camp Counselors for their summer program. Counselors will create a safe and engaging environment for children aged 4-13, working collaboratively with the Head Counselor and other staff during a variety of activities. Candidates should have a college degree or be in progress, preferably with a background in education or the arts. Compensation ranges from $2,000 to $3,400 for the camp season depending on experience.

Camp Description

This day camp is the summer program of LREI, a historic Progressive Education school located in the West Village. Our priority is to offer a safe, creative, engaging place for children to grow in the summertime. We foster a non-competitive, welcoming environment for all children who attend. Children are encouraged to make new friends and to participate in fun activities that interest them and provide opportunities to learn new skills.

Associate Requirements in Advance of the Camp Season

Attend all staff Orientation June 22nd–26th 10am – 6pm or until rooms are set up.

Season Dates

• Camp Season: June 29th – August 7th, 8:30am – 4:30pm.
• End-of-Season Celebration: August 8th, afternoon.

*Candidates must be available for all pre-season and season dates in order to be considered for employment, without exception. Please do not apply unless you are available for all dates listed.

Responsibilities of Associate Camp Counselors

• Work with the Head Counselor to create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children in an age‑specific camp group (between 4 and 13 years old).
• Be an active support during all activities for the camp group, including art, group games, cooking, and projects inspired by the interests of the campers.
• Supervise children in the camp group on camp‑wide field trips around the city.
• Communicate regularly with the Head Counselor.
• Meet weekly with a Camp Administrator to receive feedback and discuss topic‑specific issues.
• Work collaboratively with other counselors.

Job Qualifications

Minimum of a college degree achieved or in progress. Background in education or the arts, experience working in an educational or camp program; ability to generate and lead group activities for a group of children between the ages of 4 and 13; ability to work collaboratively with other teachers and communicate effectively. A background in a creative discipline such as art, dance, theater or music is preferred. Associate Counselors are required to get First Aid Certification (provided during orientation week).

Salary

$2,000–3,400 for the camp season, dependent on experience.
