Job description

Operating in an active, energetic, and dynamic environment involving up to two dozen children, this position is responsible for assisting the Youth Activities Coordinator (YAC) with summer youth programs at the Family Investment Center (FIC) of the Kodiak Island Housing Authority (KIHA). The Summer Youth Activities Assistant supports the planning and facilitation of daily academic, recreational, and life skills-based youth programming, with an emphasis on literacy development, healthy lifestyles, anti-bullying education, and cultural enrichment. This position is expected to demonstrate leadership, promote a safe, inclusive environment, and serve as a positive role model. Responsible to assist Youth Activities Coordinator (YAC) with the following: plan activities, oversee activities, set up equipment and supplies, supervise youth participating in onsite and offsite activities, prepare daily snacks and meals, and assist in cleaning up activity areas and organizing equipment after activities have ended. This position may be required to fill in for the YAC in the event of their absence. This position is an Hourly temporary position with a schedule dictated by the needs of the youth program, during the Summer months of June-August. Some scheduled evening work is required.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Supervise and engage youth in academic support, enrichment, crafts, games, and physical activities. Provide clear instructions, model positive behavior, and facilitate participation.
  • Assist in planning, setting up, and safely storing supplies and equipment. Maintain cleanliness and organization of activity areas.
  • Support Coordinator in implementing structured programming including literacy, healthy nutrition, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed care practices.
  • Prepare and serve snacks and meals following proper food handling procedures. Support development of healthy menus.
  • Provide basic first aid when necessary and follow emergency procedures per CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Encourage youth participation in self-sufficiency and educational enrichment (e.g., scholarship search, job prep, goal setting).
  • Collaborate with community partners to enhance program offerings and promote social responsibility and life skills.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere. Enforce rules fairly and consistently and assist with documenting and responding to behavioral concerns.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
  • Work closely with participant children and parents to understand family and child needs.
  • Work closely and professionally with other FIC staff.
Preferred qualifications
  • Minimum two years of experience working with youth in structured settings (afterschool programs, camps, classrooms, etc.).
  • Ability to lead activities, manage group dynamics, and implement age-appropriate discipline techniques.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, inclusive education, and youth development best practices.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build rapport with youth and adults.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills and documentation.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Food Handlers Certificate (KIHA will assist).
  • CPR/First Aid certification required or must be obtained prior to program start.

  • Must be able to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must have a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License and be eligible for KIHA’s vehicle insurance.
