Job summary

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC seeks a Summer Maintenance Assistant to perform preparatory maintenance work and support ongoing projects. The role involves physical labor, equipment handling, and basic custodial tasks.

Working Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, you will join Residence Life Programs & Housing to maintain a safe, clean campus environment for both high school and college students.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent required.
  • Experience in the trade areas related to the position may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preparatory maintenance tasks including gathering equipment and supplies, loading and unloading materials, and laying out materials and equipment.
  • Carry out routine labor tasks such as posting notices, cleaning, painting curbs and walls, changing light bulbs, and emptying trash bins.
  • Support supervisor with minor custodial and repair duties as assigned.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties

Summer Maintenance Assistant Perform preparatory work for maintenance activities, including gathering equipment and supplies; loading and unloading materials and laying out materials and equipment for projects. Perform a variety of routine physical labor tasks depending upon area of assignment, including posting general notices, picking up litter and debris, painting curbs, painting walls, replacing light bulbs, emptying trash bins and performing minor custodial work. Completing other basic repair or maintenance duties as assigned by the supervisor.

The Department of Residence Life Programs & Housing cooperates with the campus at large to create a community environment conducive to personal and professional growth. Residence Life staff are available to serve as peer educators, administrators, resource persons, and counselors. Professional maintenance mechanics provide facilities support and maintain rapport with the students. The Team is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive community for both a high school and college student population. We advocate for the enrichment of student artists’ experiences by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy social opportunities, identifying resources for success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing lifelong skills. We strive to prepare a residential environment that gives all students an opportunity to be innovative, creative, and reach their fullest potential. We commit to proactively and efficiently addressing students’ housing needs by creating a safe and healthy living environment. The Residence Life program at University North Carolina School of the Arts houses approximately 750 high school and college aged students.

8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Required Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

  • Safety and Compliance Awareness with the ability to follow OSHA regulations, OEM guidance, and institutional safety protocols, including proper PPE usage.
  • Customer Service Orientation with the ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with students, colleagues, and external vendors in a residential campus environment.
  • Inventory and Resource Management skills to track, organize, and procure parts, tools, and materials as needed to support repair and maintenance functions.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility to work independently or collaboratively in a dynamic environment, adjusting to evolving needs, priorities, and service expectations.
  • Communication Skills to write clear service notes, emails, and reports; and to explain technical issues to non-technical audiences.
  • Basic Computer Skills, including the use of email, digital forms, maintenance databases, and online vendor portals.
