Job summary

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Southwest District Office in Springfield, MO is seeking a design intern who will assist with drafting, road design software, and preparing plan sheets. The role includes creating plan sheets, calculating quantities, and supporting public hearings with mounted displays.

Responsibilities include delineating right of way, printing plans, and researching historical highway plans for designers, contractors, and utilities.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an ABET-accredited bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed toward degree; transcript required to verify.
• GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Utilize CAD/design software to draft and add text to design files and produce plan sheets.
• Compute quantities and material types/sizes; prepare summaries of quantities.
• Delineate right of way on plans and print plans for surveys and public-facing uses.

• Research historical databases and reproduce highway plans for designers and clients.

The design intern is assigned to job duties ranging from assistant design technician to senior design technician and/or survey assistant to senior survey assistant, based on level of education and summer job experience.

• Utilize computer aided drafting, road design software and various other computer software packages to assist in the preparation of computer-generated design plans by drafting and adding text to the design file and producing plan sheets.
• Utilize design software, computer aided design and drafting, or calculator to calculate quantities, types and sizes of materials and other information as required for project assignments; prepares summaries of quantities.
• Delineate right of way on plans and computes areas; print microfilm plans and maps for survey research and requests.
• Mount displays, project overviews, maps, and photos for public hearings and presentations; prepare handouts for bid lettings, public hearings, legal hearings and public meetings.
• Research historical databases and records; locate and reproduce highway plans that are kept on microfilm or compact disk for designers, the general contractors, consultants, and utility companies.

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrolled in a relevant ABET-accredited bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
• Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
