Job description

The Summer Instructor is responsible for teaching an enrichment class(es) in a specific subject area (ie. cooking, art, dance, sports, robotics, leadership, math, etc.). The instructor develops daily lesson plans, provides classroom instruction and supervision of students in the elementary, middle, or high school summer program. Class goals shall include individual skill development, expansion of knowledge and exposure to new experiences.

This position requires advanced knowledge of and experience working with the African American community. This would be demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the community being served as well as the ability to identify specific examples of experience (professional and lived) working directly with individuals and families who identify with the African American community.

Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with participating youth.
  • Identify the needs of individual students and groups of students and provide assessment of their abilities in the subject area being taught.
  • Develops lesson plans, instructional materials, and performance goals in accordance with methods prescribed by the program manager.
  • Supervise students and incorporate positive behavior classroom management supports to create an environment that’s safe and conducive to learning.
  • Evaluate student engagement and progress in understanding the class material.
  • Provide instruction, organization and classroom management that creates a positive environment conducive to learning.
  • Enforce standards of student conduct and discipline in accordance with the SEI policies and procedures.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with SEI staff.
  • Personal adherence to SEI standards and policies at all times.
  • Other duties as required to achieve established goals and outcomes of the program.
Qualifications
  • Ability to be a positive role model and demonstrate enthusiasm for working with youth of various cultural, social, education and economic levels.
  • Experience preferable at the elementary, middle school or high school level you are interested in teaching.
  • Experience working with youth in a social service, recreation or educational environment is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate proven expertise, knowledge, and skills in the related subject matter.
  • Ability to garner students’ interest and engagement regarding classroom participation and expectations.
  • Must be self-motivated, creative, dependable, have excellent classroom management and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Salary & Benefits
  • Starts at $17.00 per hour.
