Job summary

NiSource is offering a Summer Electric Distribution Planning Intern position in Merrillville, Indiana. This 12‑week internship starts in May 2027 and targets students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2027.

Interns will work under supervision, gaining hands‑on experience in distribution planning, modeling, and utility operations. The role emphasizes learning, collaboration with engineers, and exposure to net metering and co‑gen related activities.

Qualifications

• Current student of an ABET accredited, four‑year engineering program.
• Must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study.
• Ability to work 40 hrs/week.
• Proficiency with PC applications and prefer strong skills with Python and MS Excel & Access.
• Proven communication skills.
• Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing and updating electric distribution system databases and studies.
• Gain exposure to CYME modelling and distribution planning techniques.
• Collaborate with experienced engineers to support daily work activities and project delivery.
• Assist in evaluating system needs, equipment configurations, and timing for distribution projects.
• Learn how renewable energy technologies integrate with the electric grid.
