Position Summary
The Summer Day Camp Counselor assists the El Cajon Corps Youth Programs by supporting the Lead Counselor and Corps Officers in maintaining a safe, educational, and fun Christian environment for children, aligning with the values of Jesus Christ and The Salvation Army.
Essential Functions
- Ensure the health and safety of students and maintain a clean work environment.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and co-workers.
- Develop and oversee games, recreational, and academic activities for children from kindergarten through 5th grade.
- Supervise students and volunteers in accordance with Salvation Army policies.
- Assist in transporting children for activities and field trips.
- Monitor student activities, noting strengths and areas for improvement.
- Maintain audio/video equipment, books, toys, and furnishings.
- Operate equipment such as projectors, DVD players, speakers, TVs, game consoles, and computers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Serve and clean up snacks.
- Arrive on time, with flexibility for additional hours if needed.
- Correct or reprimand students promptly for safety or behavioral issues, following camp guidelines.
- Prioritize the welfare of each participant and resolve issues proactively.
- Maintain positive morale among children and parents.
- Report any concerns about students, staff, or volunteers to the Lead Counselor or Corps Officers, documenting issues as necessary.
- Attend required training sessions, including child safety, CPR, and fleet safety.
- Participate in orientation and team meetings.
- Assist with setup and cleanup at the start and end of each week and summer.
- Maintain a professional appearance and wear the designated uniform during work hours.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Corps Officers.
Working Conditions
Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, run, jump, and twist regularly. Capable of grasping, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, and carrying supplies. Ability to operate computers, telephones, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience working with children.
- Ability to work independently and professionally.
- Ability to work effectively within a small, dynamic team.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Quick learner, able to handle multiple priorities.
- Completion of Protecting the Mission – Child Safety Training prior to working with children.
- Flexible and receptive to new ideas and methods.
