Job Description

Position Title: Substitute Custodian
Reports To: Head Custodian
Overtime Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: 403

The primary function of a Custodian is to ensure the proper upkeep and maintenance of assigned areas within a facility. The custodian is expected to follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding cleaning and performance. This position follows directives from the Lead Custodian, Head Custodian, Zone Supervisor, and/or Facilities Coordinator.

Essential Duties

• Clean school building interiors and exteriors
• Sweep, vacuum, strip, buff, wax, deep scrub, or dust mop assigned floor areas
• Remove trash from the building and place it in appropriate dumpsters/receptacles
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, and stall walls
• Refill tissue, soap, and paper towel dispensers daily
• Dust desks, furniture, walls, windowsills, and other woodwork
• Wash walls in hallways and corridors
• Dust blinds/curtains and clean all windows and glass panels
• Clean water fountains
• Polish exterior of the building daily for litter, debris, and graffiti
• Move furniture as required
• Perform minor painting tasks as needed
• Maintain all storage areas and equipment
• Secure windows and classroom doors daily
• Perform other related tasks as required

Physical and Job Requirements

Work involves frequent interruptions, changing priorities, heavy lifting, extensive walking, and occasional work in inclement weather. Tasks may include climbing, reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions. Exposure to dust, dirt, bodily waste, odors, chemicals, heights, electrical hazards, and heavy cleaning equipment. The role requires exertion of 20-40 pounds occasionally and 15 pounds frequently, with activities like stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions. Visual accuracy is necessary for quality work, and safety hazards are present.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Minimum six months custodial experience preferred, one year preferred.
