Job summary

Greater Philadelphia YMCA is seeking a Summer Camp Unit Leader for Camp Speers in the Poconos. You will lead a team, supervise camp activities, and help children reach their potential during the summer program.

The role emphasizes safety, positive behavior management, and fostering inclusive environments, with rewards like membership and flexible scheduling. Experience with youth programs and two seasons as a counselor are preferred.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Enrolled in a minimum of 2 years of child development coursework approved by state licensing requirements.
• Experience working with children and at least two seasons working as a Y Camp Counselor or as a counselor in a comparable program.
• Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and experience working with children.
• Ability to lead and motivate a team.
• Ability to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior and recognize hazard situations.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and train staff to ensure effective implementation of programs and activities. Ensure staff adherence to all policies and procedures. Coach and train staff in providing quality camping experience.
• Plan and oversee the implementation of a variety of camp activities; ensure activities are age appropriate and contribute to the overall growth and development of the campers.
• Identify, address, and redirect/correct inappropriate behavior.
• Ensure appropriate behavior of campers and staff to avoid the risk of accidents.
• Assist in maintaining effective communication with parents/guardians regarding camper and camp activities.
• Embody the GPY commitment to diversity and inclusion, no matter race, color, creed, or gender identification.
