Summer Camp Lifeguard - YMCA of Greater Springfield

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Aquatics and the Aquatics Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of all aquatics programs.

Essential Functions

1. Ensure a safe environment within the aquatics area by maintaining alertness, conducting patrols, and providing emergency assistance.
2. Follow pool policies, guidelines, and safety procedures; warn swimmers of improper activities or dangers.
3. Prevent incidents related to aquatic programming and areas.
4. Respond as a certified responder, administer first aid, rescue swimmers in distress, and perform CPR or artificial respiration if necessary.
5. Inspect pool facilities, equipment, and water quality; assist in cleaning and water testing; record observations.
6. Enhance water safety skills of participants through individual or group instruction.
7. Create a fun and safe environment that promotes learning and aligns with YMCA’s core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Qualifications

• Be at least 16 years old with a valid Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification.
• Prior lifeguard experience preferred.
• CPR, AED, and First Aid certification for professional responders.
• Ability to complete a pre-employment swim test demonstrating necessary skills.
• Strong decision-making, responsibility, and sound judgment.
• Knowledge of safety protocols, emergency medical procedures, and operational policies.
• Ability to move independently within the work environment and remain on extended periods of siting, standing, or reaching.
• Effective communication skills via computer, phone, and smartphone.
