About This Opportunity
Train and supervise an assigned group of camp counselors. Plan, coordinate, and direct the functions of the counselors within the camping program. Ensure the quality of programs and safety of counselors and youth at all times during camp. Provide guidance and role modeling to counselors and ensure safety and a positive experience for counselors and campers. The incumbent also functions as a music instructor to support the musical component of the Music Conservatory Program.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and organize an assigned group of Camp Counselors during scheduled and unscheduled blocks of time in accordance with camp rules and regulations.
- Provide spiritual guidance and encouragement to counselors.
- Train Counselors in proper methods of leading groups of campers; answer questions during camp and follow-up to ensure understanding of training.
- Train Counselors in proper safety of campers based on established camp rules and regulations.
- Identify safety hazards and communicate with the DMD/Camp Director for resolution.
- Analyze the strengths and challenges of each Counselor and document for review.
- Provide constructive feedback for personal growth.
- Promote participation of Counselors in activities to ensure a positive camp experience.
- Prepare daily schedules for Counselors, ensuring appropriate coverage and breaks.
- Handle camper discipline problems; serve as dorm monitor for staff dorms.
- Be available for camper/counselor consultations and assist with handling campers needing special attention.
- Exhibit control of campers in the absence of Counselors and apply proper discipline techniques.
- Ensure accountability, security, and safety of youth; report accidents promptly.
- Verify cabin rosters weekly and conduct nightly cabin checks.
- Maintain discipline records and report to the DMD/Camp Director.
- Take over for Counselors in emergencies.
- Conduct cabin inspections and review incident reports for proper documentation.
- Maintain cabin materials and oversee laundry, money, and supplies.
- Review and follow-up on reports; summarize occurrences for the DMD/Camp Director.
- Escalate major issues immediately.
- Keep program records and supervise cabin cleanliness.
- Coordinate with maintenance for repairs.
- Participate in evening programs, special events, overnights, and activities.
- Assist with meal supervision and maintain a positive mealtime atmosphere.
- Provide quality music instruction, including lessons, homework review, and preparation for recitals and concerts.
- Plan schedules, monitor student progress, and ensure proper instrument care.
- Develop musical activities to enhance abilities and skills.
- Coordinate within camp policies and procedures.
- Maintain discipline and a friendly environment during all program periods.
- Participate in classes and perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform ministry functions such as devotional presentations, prayer, and leading Christian songs.
What We Are Looking For In You
- Six months experience teaching child development or youth programs in a church preferred.
- Six months experience teaching music education, with ability to teach lessons and play instruments, preferred.
- Equivalent training and experience that provide the required skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
- CPR and First Aid Certification
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Endurance including climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting, work irregular hours, and operate in outdoor environments with sun and heat exposure.
