General Definition of Work

Are you enthusiastic, motivated, and enjoy working with kids? Spend your summer working with the City of New Bern Parks and Recreation Department as a Summer Camp Counselor. We are currently recruiting Summer Camp Counselors for the following camp:

• June 16, 2025 - August 2, 2025

Bear Bunch Day Camp (West New Bern and Pleasant Hill sites)

Must be able to work varied schedules from 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM Monday - Friday. Camps will not be in session on July 4, 2025.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

(The following tasks are illustrative of the work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if they are similar, related, or a logical part of the position.)

• Guide campers ages 6-12 daily.
• Lead and participate in camp activities.
• Assist other counselors as needed.
• Supervise campers ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
• Teach sports skills.
• Supervise campers at aquatic facilities and during field trips.
• Assist in planning daily activities.
• Help complete Summer Food Program documentation and adhere to guidelines.
• Lead group games and art projects.
• Maintain attendance records and permission slips for each camper.
• Handle parental concerns and complaints when the supervisor is unavailable.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of recreation activities, promoting good conduct, and serving as a positive role model for campers; ability to work effectively in a team; maintain courteous relationships with campers, parents, staff, and community partners; follow policies and procedures; lead, supervise, and exercise good judgment; understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Requirements

• Must be 17 years old as of May 30, 2025.
• Previous experience in a summer camp or similar setting preferred.
• Experience working with children or teens (paid or volunteer) preferred.
• Must have Basic First Aid and CPR Certification before employment; training will be provided if needed.
• Valid driver's license in North Carolina; CDL "P" preferred.
