An established community-focused organization is seeking enthusiastic counselors for a summer camp dedicated to empowering local youth. In partnership with the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance and Grow Detroit's Young Talent
Employee Category: Temporary, Part-time
Hours: Monday through Thursday, Up to 20 hours a week over the course of 6 weeks
Pay: $12.50 to $15 per hour (Pay based on organizational budget)
Location: On-Site; Work will primarily take place at The Healing Hub (Eastside, Detroit, MI) with some meetings at Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance (Westside, Detroit, MI).
Reporting to CRCAA Youth Director Darrell Hall, Detroit Heals Detroit Executive Director Cam Hollenquest, and Co-chair Brianna Donald.
Detroit Heals Detroit exists to foster healing justice for Detroit youth, allowing them to transform their pain into power. With a goal to combat trauma, we use healing-centered engagement to share our greatest vulnerabilities with the world while dismantling oppressive systems for marginalized Detroit youth.
Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance is a community-based development organization (CBDO) with significant reach into the community. CRCAA has successfully engaged youth through immersive programming, stabilizing neighborhoods, and activating community efforts. Learn more about our partner here.
Grow Detroit's Young Talent (GDYT) is a citywide summer jobs program that trains and employs young adults between the ages of 14 and 24 for up to 120 hours. Youth participants must be permanent residents of Detroit and eligible to work in the United States. A broad range of jobs are available, including community cleanups, event planning, accounting, retail, and Junior Police or Fire Cadets. Last year, over 8,000 local youth received employment, which is our goal again this year. Learn more about our partner here.
As a Counselor, you will support the Black Joy Summer Camp by delivering an enriching and engaging summer camp experience to local youth. Counselors will gain professional skills such as leadership experience while actively contributing to the camp's daily operations, working directly with children, and supporting camp programming.
Interest in working with youth, community development, or education.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a team and collaborate with others.
Enthusiastic, dependable, and open to learning new skills.
No prior experience required, though experience with youth programs is a plus.
Communication: Interact with campers, parents, and fellow team members in a professional and respectful manner.
Professional Development: Participate in GDYT's job readiness training, career exploration sessions, and attend weekly check-ins to discuss progress and receive feedback.
