Summer Camp Counselors will join the Recreation Department to provide activities, guidance, and supervision to campers in a variety of settings including the camp’s base of operation, aboard transportation, and while visiting a variety of field trip locations.

Responsibilities

• Serve the campers as a positive role model, building healthy and respectful relationships with all.
• Prepare weekly activity plans in accordance with curriculum objectives and program philosophy.
• Meet the emotional, social, physical and cognitive needs of each child.
• Support camper behavioral issues.
• Maintain cleanliness of all utilized facilities to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
• Sustain open communication and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with a variety of stakeholders including children, parents, staff, and supervisors.
• Work cooperatively and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Comply with all mandated reporting requirements.
• Maintain confidentiality and effectively operate in an environment which involves sensitive situations with participants, families, staff, and the general public.
• Write daily and behavioral reports as directed.
• Perform duties in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, offices, classrooms, indoor gymnasiums, outdoor fields, waterfronts, and field trips to different locations.
• Regular attendance on scheduled workdays is required.
• Attend scheduled pre-camp and in-service staff meetings and trainings.

Required Qualifications

• Must have completed freshman year of high school by the time summer camp programs begin.
• Knowledge and/or familiarity with:
• A variety of games, sports, activities, riddles, songs, and arts & crafts that children will enjoy.
• Positive behavior management techniques.
• Water safety.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to follow and provide directions to complete assigned tasks.
• Be flexible and a team player.
• A willingness to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in an after school, camp, recreation, or school setting.
• Experience working with children ages 4-14.
• Experience planning activities for children.
• Experience addressing camper behavioral issues with children and parents.
• CPR/ First Aid certified.

Job Type

Salary

$15.00 - $17.00 per hour

Schedule

Monday-Friday; up to 29 hours/week (May - early June), 40 hours/week (June – August)

In-person (J. Richard Martin Community Center, 189 Alfred St., Biddeford or Teen Center at Rotary Park)
