Job Description: Camp Counselor

SUPERVISOR: Unit Lead, Assistant Camp Director, Outdoor Program Manager

DEPARTMENT: Outdoor Program

POSITION SUMMARY

The Unit Counselor works to provide an effective resident camp program by supervising and providing program and daily camp activities to all Girl Scout campers, providing direct assistance and support to each camper, and effectively working with fellow Unit Counselors, Unit Leader, and the Administrative Team.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Ensure a positive atmosphere and well-being for all campers.
  2. Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem-solving in a group setting.
  3. Maintain communication with the Unit Leader regarding any camper or unit needs.
  4. Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information regarding business affairs, programs, campers, or staff members.
  5. Interact daily with campers and work to provide a safe and consistent environment.
  6. Understand and know staff and campers - help them to respect the diversity of others and to appreciate differences and similarities so that campers get the most out of their stay at camp.
  7. Responsible for leading and assisting fun and meaningful activities for campers; model constructive and enthusiastic participation in all program areas.
  8. In coordination with the Unit Leader, maintain and manage a daily schedule to meet the personal hygiene and sanitation needs of each camper and the living unit.
  9. Maintain open communication with the Unit Leader, Health Supervisor, and Outdoor Program Manager in relation to any camper needs and/or health concerns.
  10. Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with safety standards set forth by GSUSA.
  11. Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess, and enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  12. Contributes to the diversity of the council by ensuring that all materials, activities, and programs are sensitive to and reflective of the interests, values, and needs of people of all racial/ethnic groups, cultures, belief systems, and abilities.
  13. Support and promote campers and fellow staff to take risks and seek challenges.
  14. Maintains and manages a high level of customer service with parents, fellow staff, and council staff.

KNOWLEDGE AND CREDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  1. Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  2. Minimum 18 years of age.
  3. Willingness to adhere to principles of Girl Scouting, Girl Scout Law, and Girl Scout Promise.
  4. Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  5. Ability to prioritize the needs of campers and communicate with and provide direction to campers and staff of varying age and skill levels.
  6. Ability to provide constant supervision of campers and help campers navigate emotional well-being during their time at resident camp.
  7. Ability to function as a camp staff team member and work effectively with peers.
  8. Ability to identify, respond, and adapt to environmental or other hazards related to camper supervision.
  9. Ability to share living quarters with other staff (may include directly on-ground, primitive camping, rustic cabins, platform tents, or lodges).
  10. Ability to establish and maintain boundaries with campers and fellow staff.
  11. Willingness to learn and adapt to new situations, surroundings, and circumstances in a quick and effective manner.
  12. Ability to go without electronic devices for several hours or days at a time while on duty (excluding medical necessary devices).
  13. Provide at least three professional references.

Preferred:

  1. Knowledge of Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

ABILITY AND SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Subscribes to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement.
  2. Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  3. Strong human relations skills and ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds.
  4. Ability to exercise good judgement.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  6. Excellent computer skills.
  7. Solution driven with the ability to effectively problem solve.
  8. Desire and ability to teach, work, and relate successfully with campers and fellow staff members.
  9. Passion and excitement for the outdoors, programs offered (climbing, horseback riding, sailing, archery, hiking, etc.) and providing an exceptional program to each camper.
  10. Demonstrated maturity, sound judgement, integrity, and flexibility.
  11. Enthusiasm, patience, and a sense of humor.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Ability to endure prolonged standing, bending, reaching, walking and hiking on uneven, rocky ground.
  2. Willingness to work outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions including sun, heat, rain, and humidity.
  3. Understanding of and be comfortable navigating around wildlife animals, i.e., insects, reptiles, mammals.
  4. Capability to lift or move objects up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally lift or move objects of up to 50 pounds.

HOURS AND TRAVEL

  1. Will live on camp during camp season.
  2. Will receive one full consecutive 24-hour period off work in a week and 2-3 hour breaks daily.
