Job summary

CalvertHealth Medical Center offers a Summer Nurse Externship for nursing students entering the final year of their RN program. You will work alongside an RN mentor to deliver patient care, while receiving hands-on coaching and clinical support.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited RN program, have completed their first two clinical rotations, and expect to provide official transcripts at hire. 36–40 hours weekly, three 12-hour shifts per pay period, and support from our Nursing

Qualifications

• Enrolled in accredited RN program and in final year; transcripts required.
• Must hold CNA license by time of hire.
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers by time of hire.
• No experience outside nursing school required.

Responsibilities

• Work with an RN mentor to provide patient care and learn clinical skills.
• Receive hands-on clinical coaching to build confidence and competence.
• Be supported by the Nursing Professional Development team during the externship.

JOB DESCRIPTION DETAILS

Job Summary :

At CalvertHealth we are committed to developing our future Nursing Professionals. As a Student Nurse Extern, you will work alongside an RN mentor and provide best-in-class, quality, and evidence-based patient care.You will experience clinical coaching, hands-on learning, and full integration into your practice environment.Your assigned RN mentor will help you develop the critical thinking skills needed to increase your confidence as a nursing professional. In addition, you will be supported by a member of our nursing professional development team to ensure your learning needs are met as you gain the best clinical experience possible.

Education :

• You must currently be enrolled in an accredited RN program.
• You must have successfully completed your first and second semester clinical rotations and entering your final year of your nursing program. Official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.

Registration/Certification/Licensure :

• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through the Maryland Board of Nursingby time of hire
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, by time of hire

Experience :

• No experience outside of nursing school is necessary.

Other Requirements :

Maintains unit-specific and hospital competencies, mandatory learning, and any clinical certifications required in accordance with the Staff Education and Training policy GA-057 and/or any other department requirements.

36–40 hours per week, 12-hour shifts and three 4-hour program classes in addition to scheduled shifts. During the summer your schedule will mirror your clinical coach’s schedule, excluding holidays.

CalverHealth's Nursing Professional and Education Department has officially begun preparing for our 2027Summer Nurse Externship program. We will be accepting applications from 9/1/26 – 1/15/27. Interviews for this program will begin January 25 –29, 2027 with an estimated program start of June 2027.
