Job summary

CalvertHealth in Maryland offers a Student Nurse Extern program where you work alongside an RN mentor, gaining hands-on patient care, clinical coaching, and full integration into the practice environment.

You will be enrolled in an accredited RN program, complete rotations, and meet licensure requirements (CNA by hire, BLS by hire). The schedule is 36–40 hours weekly with 12-hour shifts and classes, designed to enhance critical thinking and confidence.

Qualifications

• Be enrolled in an accredited RN program and in good standing.
• Completed first and second semester clinical rotations; transcripts provided at hire.
• Hold a CNA license by time of hire (Maryland Board of Nursing) and BLS for Healthcare Providers by time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Work alongside an RN mentor to provide best-in-class patient care.
• Engage in clinical coaching, hands-on learning, and classroom components.
• Maintain unit and hospital competencies as required by policy GA-057.

Education

Job description

Your assigned RN mentor will help you develop the critical thinking skills needed to increase your confidence as a nursing professional. In addition, you will be supported by a member of our nursing professional development team to ensure your learning needs are met as you gain the best clinical experience possible.
• Education:
• You must currently be enrolled in an accredited RN program.
• You must have successfully completed your first and second semester clinical rotations and entering your final year of your nursing program. Official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
• Registration/Certification/Licensure:
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through the Maryland Board of Nursing by time of hire
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, by time of hire
• Experience:
• No experience outside of nursing school is necessary.
• Other Requirements:
• Maintains unit-specific and hospital competencies, mandatory learning, and any clinical certifications required in accordance with the Staff Education and Training policy GA-057 and/or any other department requirements.
• 36-40 hours per week, 12-hour shifts and three 4-hour program classes in addition to scheduled shifts. During the summer your schedule will mirror your clinical coach's schedule, excluding holidays.
