Job summary

Fusion Energy Base in California is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to help build web UIs and backend software for the fusion demonstration facility. You will collaborate with controls engineers, scientists and operators to present real-time state, manage configuration and data, and support safe facility operations.

This internship offers practical engineering experience, mentorship, and exposure to the full product development lifecycle, with daily catered meals and a collaborative

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• GPA of 3.5 or above required.
• Coursework or experience in software development fundamentals and web/backend programming.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve web-based user interfaces for system status, health monitoring, configuration, and diagnostics.
• Assist in building backend services to serve real-time and historical facility data and manage configuration, metadata and state.
• Interface with controls systems and data pipelines; ensure integration between UI, APIs and facility systems.
• Write clear, maintainable code and participate in code reviews; test, debug and validate software used in live environments.

Why This Role Matters

As a Software Engineering Intern, you will help build the user interfaces and backend software systems that allow engineers, scientists and operators to run the fusion demonstration facility. You will work closely with controls engineers, scientists, and operators to develop software that presents real-time system state, manages configuration and data, and supports safe facility operations.

What You'll Do

Develop and improve web-based user interfaces for:

• System status and health monitoring
• Experiment or facility configuration
• Alerts, events, and diagnostics

Assist in building backend services that:

• Serve real-time and historical facility data
• Manage configuration, metadata, and system state
• Interface with controls systems and data pipelines

Support integration between:

• UI applications, backend APIs, and facility systems

Write clear, maintainable code and contribute to code reviews

Help test, debug, and validate software used in live environments

What You Bring

Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (Junior, Senior, or graduate student preferred)

• Coursework or experience in:
  • Software development fundamentals
  • Web or backend programming
• Familiarity with at least one of:
  • TypeScript / JavaScript
  • Go or Python
• Basic understanding of:
  • Client–server applications
  • APIs and data flow
  • SQL and NoSQL Databases

Additional Requirements

Able to work full time, onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in Mid May- Mid June 2027
