Job summary

Kirkham Michael is seeking energetic civil engineering students for entry-level, temporary, Summer Civil Engineering Intern positions in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, for Summer 2027. You will work under a senior team member with tasks including field observation, material testing, and basic CAD design/drawing using AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation GeoPak.

Responsibilities include field observations, surveying support, bridge inspections, computations, and report preparation.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an accredited university majoring in Civil Engineering.
• Knowledge of civil engineering concepts and procedures.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
• Ability to apply creative problem-solving.
• Valid driver's license.
• Experience in transportation or construction engineering is a plus.

Responsibilities

Summary/Objective

Gain valuable intern experience with Kirkham Michael! We are currently looking for energetic and knowledgeable civil engineering students to fill entry-level, temporary, Summer Civil Engineering Intern positions for our Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska offices in Summer 2027. You will work under the direction of a senior team member and receive specific instruction for required tasks and project components. Duties may include field construction observation, material testing, basic engineering calculations, and CAD design/drawing. Instruction in basic AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Microstation GeoPak will be provided as you begin to apply engineering education to practical design solutions.

Essential Functions

• Observe construction activities, assist with materials testing.
• Perform basic survey services.
• Perform bridge inspections in the field and assist with generating inspection reports.
• Standard computations or analysis.
• Drawing (AutoCAD, Microstation) assignments to assist in development of project plans.
• Assists on other tasks such as: hydrology and hydraulics studies, report preparation, preparation of permit applications.

Required Education and Experience

Requirements that are job-related and consistent with business necessity.

• Bachelor’s degree in progress; currently enrolled at an accredited university majoring in Civil Engineering.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of civil engineering to projects.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• High level of creativity.
• Experience in transportation or construction engineering a plus, but not required.
• Successful candidates will be articulate with professional presence, with solid decision-making, planning, and organizational skills.
• Valid Driver's License required.
