Job summary

ATI Specialty Materials seeks a Powder Atomization Process Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 in North Carolina. You will work with Engineering and Operations teams to improve manufacturing processes, support automation initiatives, and enhance powder production quality and consistency.

You'll gain hands-on experience in powder atomization, process improvement, automation, and error-proofing while collaborating across plants to standardize practices and reduce variability.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Rising junior or senior preferred with strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Interest in manufacturing processes, process improvement, and automation.

Responsibilities

• Configure barcode scanning to error-proof the BPO can-up process.
• Develop a process to perform addbacks and dilutions on BOSS at BPO.
• Analyze process data to identify opportunities for quality and process improvement.
• Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to implement practical process improvements.

2027 Powder Atomization Process Engineering Internship – ATI Specialty Materials

Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027

Target Students: Undergraduate and Graduate students currently pursuing Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering disciplines

Engineer the Process Behind Advanced Materials – Intern in Powder Atomization Process Engineering at ATI

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Powder Atomization Process Engineering Intern, you’ll work alongside Engineering and Operations teams to improve manufacturing processes, support automation initiatives, and enhance the quality and consistency of powder production. You’ll apply your engineering knowledge to hands‑on projects involving process optimization, error‑proofing, and melt cleanliness.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

• Configure barcode scanning to error-proof the BPO can-up process, collaborating across plants with the Oakdale (OAK) team.
• Develop a process to perform addbacks and dilutions on BOSS at BPO, reducing reliance on manual processing.
• Analyze process data and manufacturing information to identify opportunities for quality and process improvement.
• Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to develop and implement practical process improvements.

What You’ll Gain

• Interest in manufacturing processes, process improvement, and automation.
• Ability to analyze process information and identify opportunities to improve quality and consistency.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work effectively with Engineering, Operations, and cross‑functional teams.
• Willingness to work in a manufacturing and plant environment.
