Position Responsibilities
This position is similar to a utility locator or utility designator, requiring a minimum of 4-8 years of utility locating or designating experience. The role involves using various pipe and cable locating devices, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Responsibilities include selecting and maintaining traffic signage, following safety protocols, and performing subsurface utility engineering (SUE) according to ASCE standards. Experience with surveying, CADD, and vacuum excavation trucks is a plus.
The candidate may need to operate and maintain vacuum excavation trucks and related equipment safely and efficiently. Key duties include designating and locating underground utilities, understanding as-built drawings and roadway plans, creating field sketches, performing records research, and supervising crews. Safety meetings, hazard identification, and creating corrective actions are also essential parts of the role.
Qualifications include following instructions, mentoring crews, leadership skills, and the ability to accurately locate utilities in various conditions. Mechanical aptitude and equipment maintenance skills are advantageous. A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a DOT Medical card are required. A current CDL is a plus. Certifications like NULCA are also beneficial.
The physical requirements include lifting 50 pounds, walking, working in all weather conditions, and willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
