Job summary

Bateman Civil Survey in Apex, NC, is seeking a field-based SUE Technician 2 to conduct on-site investigations, identify and map underground utilities using EM locators and GPR, and support engineering and construction projects. Responsibilities include designation and verification of utilities per ASCE 38-22, operating locating equipment, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring safety compliance.

A HS diploma is required; 2–4 years of field experience is preferred, with travel and a valid driver's

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; technical training or an associate’s degree in surveying, GIS, or civil engineering is a plus.
• 2–4 years of field experience in utility locating, surveying, or subsurface utility engineering.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.

Responsibilities

• Conduct utility designation, verification, and mapping using electromagnetic (EM) locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other geophysical tools.
• Identify and classify underground utilities per ASCE 38-22 standards.
• Operate and maintain subsurface utility locating equipment and GPS data collection devices.
• Work alongside SUE Analyst to collect and integrate SUE data into project deliverables.
• Provide real-time field documentation, sketches, and reports for utility data findings.
• Assist with vacuum excavation (potholing) to expose utilities when necessary.
• Communicate with project managers, surveyors, engineers, and utility owners regarding utility conflicts and findings.
• Provide mentorship and professional development to junior field employees.
• Ensure field safety compliance, following OSHA and company safety protocols.
• Provide training and guidance to SUE/Survey Tech I as needed.

About the position

This role is field-based and involves conducting on-site investigations to identify, designate, and map underground utilities using geophysical locating equipment. The SUE Technician 2 will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and efficient utility data collection for engineering and construction projects.

Pay

• Starting at $25 per hour depending upon experience
