Summary
The Success Coach will be a student’s point of contact for everything at the University—from academic advisement, to campus involvement, to financial aid counseling, to career development—helping the student chart and navigate an individual path as part of the LIU community. A coach works one‑on‑one with a student to create a success plan tailored to his/her/their needs, goals, and interests, guiding students to choose courses, select a major, find scholarships, internships, and study abroad opportunities, and launch their careers. Success Coaches keep students on track toward graduation and support a seamless transition from college student to successful professional. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Success Coach may specialize in and execute functions in Academic Success, Student Involvement, Career Success, Residence Life, and Campus Life.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as primary advisor and success coach for a caseload of students
- Prepare students for their transition to the college and integrate new students into the intellectual, cultural, and social life of the University
- Support the student experience through the LIU four‑year model from pre‑enrollment through graduation
- Assist in pre‑enrollment, admissions, orientation, campus, and career activities reinforcing the importance of a collective, integrated college experience geared toward academic and career success
- Plan and execute campus programming, including activities, student success, and life planning seminars, to enhance student life, enjoyment, and effectiveness
- Provide leadership to an ancillary responsibility within academic, career, and/or student life
- Provide academic advisement through the progression of initial registration upon acceptance and major/degree selection as it pertains to career interests and pursuits
- Interpret career assessment instruments and provide career resources/advisement, developing a timely career track congruent with students’ academic pursuits
- Review financial aid information and assist students with understanding financial aid procedures
- Coordinate with affiliate departments to achieve program recruitment and retention goals
- Complete weekly and monthly reports that demonstrate progress toward retention, student registration, and other key job performance indicators

Academic & Career Success
- Lead the advancement of student success, retention, and persistence goals using best‑practices and current research
- Ensure students’ progression toward their educational goal is monitored and use strategies/tools to address academic persistence, engagement, and completion
- Facilitate academic workshop series on time management, note‑taking, self‑registration tutorials, and other programming to promote academic success
- Support all functions of Career Success in accordance with NACE Standards
- Assist with monitoring and tracking LIU Handshake, including student profile completion, resume competition, internship placement, and student employment outcomes
- Execute campus‑wide career support/success workshops, programs, and events
- Plan, develop, and execute internship‑ready student program
- Work collaboratively with the Alumni and Employer Relations Office
- Plan, facilitate, and execute student employment initiatives, including on‑campus employment fair and career/internship expos
- Ensure academic and personal support to international students, including compliance with immigration procedures, SEVIS, and all needed support
- Guide and advise students through study abroad options via LIU Global or faculty‑led opportunities
Student Involvement
- Develop campus‑wide programming, traditions, and initiatives that enhance a vibrant campus life experience for all students, both residing on‑campus and commuting
- Provide leadership to LIU Cares, the University‑wide service initiative by creating opportunities on‑campus and in the community
- Facilitate the student leadership program and manage student organizations and Fraternity and Sorority Life
- Coordinate the Legacy Campaign with Student Government Association in giving a class gift
- Support the growth and development of the E‑sports program, managing inventory of recreational and sports league equipment
- Develop and execute new student orientation programs
- Create, design, and execute marketing material for all campus events
- Recruit, train, and hire a cohort of student leaders to serve as orientation leaders, resident assistants, and student workers
- Provide weekend and evening coverage of student life and student organization programs
Operations and Community Standards (Housing Operations and Residence Life)
- Plan and execute a marketing plan for student on‑campus housing selection
- Assist with all functions of LIU Housing operation in accordance with ACUHO‑I
- Manage all residence hall facilities upgrades, repairs, and renovation planning
- Develop and revise residence hall policies and procedures
- Ensure robust programming within the residence halls throughout the week and weekends
- Advise and support the growth of Residence Hall Association (RHA)
- Support efforts for enrollment and marketing of Learning Communities
- Assist with campus efforts to comply with immunization regulations meeting Public Health Law compliance
- Manage and maintain centralized records, manage communication to involved parties of each conduct case, monitor, and appropriately close cases in a timely manner
- Provide training on an ongoing basis for on‑duty staff in Residence Life & housing, Public Safety, and other campus partners on the community standards process; supervise implementation of the process by all conduct officers, ensuring fairness and developmentally relevant, valuable outcomes through one‑on‑one communication
- Facilitate educational programming for students on community standards to promote accountability, productive civil discourse, and mutual respect
- Serve as primary hearing officer for student conduct hearing process and investigators for Title IX
- Assist with monitoring, tracking, and seeking all LIU community service‑related activities
- Support and monitor university Clery records and Title IX reports
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- At least 1–3 years of progressively professional experience in higher education, student affairs; sound judgment and decision‑making skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- High energy and enthusiasm to work with students and propel them toward success
- Ability to design and implement innovative programs with strong attention to detail
- Interpersonal communication skills
- Computer skills/literacy
Working Conditions
Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to execute the position’s role responsibly. Occasional travel to/from other LIU campuses for facilitation of trainings, meetings, and other university functions.
