Job summary

Universal Surveying & Mapping LLC is seeking an experienced Subsurface Utility Technician (SUE) to join the team. The role supports SUE and Surveying departments with fieldwork, data post-processing, and occasional overnight travel.

The candidate should have hands-on experience with utility locating, mapping, field equipment, and be able to work both in the office and in the field. Cross-training across departments is expected.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; an Associate’s degree or higher is preferred.
• Hands-on experience with SUE designating and utility locating equipment.
• Knowledge of excavation standards.
• Survey data processing is a plus.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented, methodical, and able to work independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety of crew, clients, and the public at all times.
• Operate utility locating equipment for SUE designation.
• Research and interpret utility records and apply findings to fieldwork.
• Understand project goals, scopes of work, and client expectations.
• Safely excavate and expose subsurface utilities according to project guidelines.
• Operate and maintain SUE and Surveying field equipment.
• Safely operate company vehicles.
• Interpret subsurface utility information in the field and through post-processing.
• Communicate field findings and analysis clearly and effectively.
• Support both Surveying and SUE departments (cross-training required).
• Respond to last-minute requests and assist field crews when needed.
• Maintain a professional image and foster positive client relationships.
• Produce technical drawings and maps using AutoCAD, Civil3D, MicroStation, or similar software.
• Assist with budget and schedule adherence for deliverables.

SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced SUE Technician to join our team. This role supports both Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and Surveying departments. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with utility locating, mapping, field equipment, and post-processing data. This position involves both office and fieldwork and may require overnight travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND SKILLS

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s Degree or higher preferred
