Job summary

UT Tyler University Academy at Palestine is seeking substitute teachers to support learning during teacher absences. You will follow scheduled lesson plans and help students stay on task in the classroom.

Job Type / Hours per Week

Part‑time; up to 19.5 hours weekly, hours and schedule will vary. School days/hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 am‑4:00 pm.

Job Summary

UT Tyler University Academy at Tyler Campus is looking to build a pool of candidates for substitute teachers. As openings become available, applicants will be selected for interviews. This position will engage with students through the teaching of the assigned subject during a teacher’s absence. Candidates will utilize the teacher’s scheduled lesson plans to facilitate and monitor students during class.

Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks
  • Facilitate/monitor students during class and other school activities.
  • Complete daily attendance records.
Required Education / Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • General subject content knowledge.
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Education / Experience
  • Some college hours or associate degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
  • Effectively manage classroom behavior, maintain order, and establish a learning environment that mirrors that of the regular teacher.
  • The ability to quickly adapt to different grade levels, subject matter, and classroom routines.
  • Effective communication with students, teachers, and administrative staff.
Other Information

The employee will be on an as‑needed basis, not to exceed 19.5 hours per week and for the instructional days defined by the University Academy District Calendar.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
