Job summary

Ombudsman Educational Services in Nashville, a ChanceLight company, seeks an On-Call Substitute Teacher for Grades 7-12 in its Alternative Education program. You will deliver standards-aligned instruction, design daily plans, manage classrooms, and collaborate with staff to support at-risk students in a dynamic learning environment while maintaining safety and structure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in education or a closely related field of study.
• Licensed TN substitute teaching credential (current or in process).
• Ability to obtain crisis management training certification.
• Experience in curriculum development and differentiation; preferably in an alternative education and/or behavioral health program setting.
• Experience working with at-risk students in diverse needs at various levels.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Deliver standards-aligned instruction using curriculum materials and digital platforms to maximize student mastery.
• Design daily lesson plans and structured classroom schedules meeting state requirements.
• Collaborate with teachers to provide targeted instructional support and curriculum modifications.
• Establish clear behavioral expectations to cultivate a safe, structured learning environment.
• Communicate progress with parents and guardians.
• Participate in team meetings to address student concerns and develop action plans.
• Monitor student progress through data and performance metrics.
• Stay current with instructional practices and professional development.
• Respond to feedback to support growth.
• Perform additional duties to ensure smooth school operations and student success.

As an On-Call Substitute Teacher, you are accountable for driving measurable student achievement in Grades 7-12 by consistently executing instructional practices aligned with ChanceLight Education standards and Ombudsman policies. You play a critical role in maintaining instructional continuity, classroom stability, and a high-performance learning environment.

Responsibilities Include:

• Delivering engaging, standards-aligned instruction through curriculum materials, digital learning platforms, and educational software to maximize student mastery.
• Designing daily lesson plans and structured classroom schedules that align with state requirements and school expectations while maintaining instructional momentum.
• Collaborating with teachers and support staff to provide targeted instructional support and approved curriculum modifications that meet diverse learner needs.
• Establishing and reinforcing clear behavioral expectations to cultivate a safe, structured, and highly effective learning environment grounded in consistency and accountability.
• Communicating proactively with parents and guardians regarding student progress, areas for growth, and relevant changes that may impact academic performance.
• Participating in team meetings to address student-specific academic or behavioral concerns and to develop aligned action plans.
• Monitoring and analyzing student progress through systematic review of classroom data, documentation systems, and performance metrics.
• Staying current with research-based instructional practices, subject-area developments, and professional learning opportunities to enhance instructional effectiveness.
• Responding constructively to formal and informal feedback to support continuous professional growth.
• Performing additional duties as assigned to ensure seamless school operations and sustained student success.

Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in education or a closely related field of study.
• Licensed currently or in the process of obtaining a valid TN state substitute teaching credential.
• Ability to obtain and maintain certification in company approved crisis management training.
• Prior experience and/or knowledge in curriculum development, differentiation and instruction; preferably in an alternative, special education and/or behavioral health program setting.
• Prior experience and/or knowledge in alternative educational services and working with at-risk students with diverse needs at various levels.
• Proven ability to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining organization and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in providing motivation and having critical conversations with students that help move them toward realistic goals.
• Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency and make independent decisions.
• Advanced oral and written communication, organization, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem solving, and decision-making ability.
• Well-versed in the use of relevant technology including experience with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, database entry and basic office equipment.
