Substitute Job Description & Expectations

Substitute teachers serve in the absence of regular teachers and may be employed when notified by a school principal/supervisor or his/her designee. To as great an extent as possible, substitute teachers should possess the training and experience to ensure that students receive uninterrupted instruction when the regular teacher has to be absent. Although a certified teacher is preferred, an individual with a high school diploma from an accredited high school (or its equivalent - GED) will meet the minimum educational requirements. Substitutes must be available for work and able to respond on short notice. They also must be available to participate in the district's in-service program for substitute teachers. The principal/director has the responsibility for evaluating the effectiveness of each substitute teacher employed in his/her school. In order to ensure that the instructional program of the classroom teacher is carried out as planned during the teacher's absence, the substitute teacher will:

  • report to the main office at the time designated by the principal at the beginning of the day.
  • obtain the room assignment, materials and lesson plans.
  • ask about disciplinary codes and other regulations and policies.
  • inquire about responsibilities other than teaching, such as lunchroom duty, hall duty, etc.
  • become familiar with the physical layout of the buildings and the instructional program, as time allows, including such activities as sports events, student organizations, etc.
  • keep an accurate record of student attendance and follow the school's established procedures in reporting attendance.
  • follow the teacher's lesson plans as closely as possible unless otherwise advised by the teacher or principal.
  • leave notations to the regular teacher indicating the work completed by the class.
  • correct all papers completed during the day and leave them in a conspicuous place for the teacher.
  • leave the classroom and materials exactly as found to the extent possible.
  • make a special effort to establish rapport with students, and refer exceptionally difficult problems to the assistant principal or principal.
  • assign homework according to instructions in the regular teacher's lesson plans.
  • maintain an organized classroom throughout the day; assist students who need help.
  • after the students have been dismissed, remain in the building until all responsibilities have been completed.
  • before leaving, check with the secretary to see if a substitute will be requested for the next day.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma and 21 years of age (Copy of High School Diploma)
  • Must have tuberculin certificate (within the past 1 years)
  • Must have satisfactory background check report (conducted by the district)
  • Must complete substitute training class - when classes are scheduled dates will be advertised on the school district website
  • Substitute packet must be complete prior to taking the substitute class.
