Job summary

  • Letter of application (full application submitted through Teach Iowa) for substitute teaching position.
  • Physical examination form. Required for all employees for placement on active substitute list; to be updated every three years at a Cost to be borne by the employee.
  • Clean background check and fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the ability to enhance academic performance and support for and implementation of the District's student achievement goals.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students through the use of differentiated instruction.
  • Use research-based instructional strategies to deliver instruction that meets the multiple learning needs of all students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and shows lesson plans, evidence of preparation upon the request of immediate superior.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of Standards and Benchmarks, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Strive to implement by instruction and action the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assess the accomplishment of students on a regular basis, provides progress reports as required and provides parental communications regarding the student.
  • Use a variety of research-based methods to monitor student learning.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student procedures and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Develop the knowledge and ability to implement Iowa Teaching Standards.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable and contractual terms.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperates with department heads and provides input in their job performance.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by learning and using research- based strategies.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities established by the District.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER INFORMATION

The following guidelines will be in effect for the 2026-27 school year concerning substitute teachers.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER RATES WITH A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE
  • Provisional, Educational, Substitute or Professional Certificate. A four year degree.
  • Teaching days 1-15 - $136.00/day
  • 1/2 teaching day - $ 68.00
Requirements

Each substitute teacher must have on file in the Central Administration Office:

  • Valid Dept of Education, Provisional, Professional, or Substitute Certificate.

After fifteen (15) consecutive days in the same substitute teaching position, the substitute teacher will be placed on the salary schedule at the B.A. base salary on the first (1st) experience level.

  • The pay for a substitute teacher who is employed for a half-day or less shall be one-half day of pay. A substitute teacher who is employed for more than one-half day shall be a full rate of pay.
  • The administration will attempt to employ certified substitute teachers whenever possible, however, for limited periods of time, or in those situations when no one is available, regular teachers may be asked to assist.

JOB GOAL: To help students learn concepts and skills of a particular subject matter. This learning will contribute to the students' development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

Qualification
  • Certificate, Teaching License or other legal credential required.
  • Degree(s) required and area of major subject.
  • Prior job experience (if necessary or preferred).

This position will flucturate in regard to hours and days. No guarantee of work hours or days.
