Job summary

IMDiversity is seeking a Substitute Teacher for Prince William County, VA, for the 2026-27 school year. This temporary role requires delivering instruction, supervising students, and maintaining classroom routines in coordination with the absent teacher.

Candidates must have 48 college credits or an associate degree, or ParaPro score 455+. Strong communication with students, staff and parents is essential, along with following health, safety and disciplinary plans.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuity of instruction using curriculum and guidance from the absent teacher.
  • Review and deliver lesson plans.
  • Maintain student schedule during the instructional day.
  • Provide assignments, correct work, update attendance, and answer questions.
  • Work with individuals and small groups.
  • Be flexible and adapt to changes in the classroom.
  • Clearly communicate expectations to students.
  • Assist with supervision on playground and during activities.
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Assist with fire drills and weather-related items as needed.
  • Follow Substitute Handbook policies and maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide a written summary to the absent teacher at the end of each assignment.
  • Return keys and follow end-of-day procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

JOB STATUS: OPEN
EFFECTIVE: 2026-27
LOCATION: Prince William County, VA

Substitute Teachers must have completed 48+ college credits or an associate's degree from an accredited college or university, or have passed the ParaPro test with a result of 455 (or higher).

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Substitutes must be skillful in effectively communicating with students, teachers, parents, and other school personnel.

They must be able to follow written and oral instructions and directions in carrying out tasks and procedures related to the instructional, behavioral, emergency and health-related plans and services.

For consideration, the following documentation must be submitted;
Complete Substitute application,
Copies of college transcript(s) or ParaPro test result
Professional references completed by current/former supervisors
Substitute applications will be reviewed once ALL required documentation has been received.

An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work at the school.

JOB SUMMARY: This temporary position performs a variety of tasks, including, but not limited to, supervising students, ensuring continuity of instruction, and managing student behavior. It communicates effectively with students, staff, and the public. The work is performed under the supervision of the building administrator. The duration of the assignment is dependent on program needs and the availability of funding.

SALARY:
22.25/hour

Responsibilities
  • Provides continuity of instruction, both verbally and in writing, utilizing curriculum provided and/or guidance by the absent teacher
  • Reviews and delivers lesson plans
  • Maintains student schedule to be followed during the instructional day
  • Provides students with assignments, corrections to work submitted for approval, updates attendance records, and answers general student questions
  • Work with individual students and small groups
  • Be available to teach a variety of subjects at different grade levels, remaining confident, comfortable, and professional while providing the appropriate level of discipline in the classroom
  • Has the ability to be flexible with change and is adaptive to environmental changes on short notice in order to meet the needs of the schools
  • Clearly communicates expectations to the students
  • Assists in the supervision of students on the playground and during any school-sponsored activity occurring during the school day, when applicable
  • Works and builds a positive relationship with students, staff, and administrators
  • Assist with fire drills
  • Assists with weather-related items of clothing as appropriate to the age/developmental level of the students
  • Follow all applicable policies, rules, and procedures, including those published in the Substitute Handbook and online
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information
  • At the conclusion of each assignment, provide the absent teacher with a written summary that includes lessons covered, incidents that may have occurred, student questions, etc. Return keys and follow end-of-the-day procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications for Successful Performance

Education or Equivalency Requirements

Minimum: Associate Degree
At least 48 earned college credits or an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university, or a ParaPro test score of 455 or higher. Must be 18 years old.

Preferred: Bachelor's Degree

Work Experience Requirements: One or more years of experience working with children is preferred.

INDOOR: Work is performed in a standard office, classroom, or indoor environment.
