Position: Substitute Teacher

Supervisor: Secretary/Principal

General Job Description: To provide short-term or long-term support to schools and students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct the classroom, accomplishing curriculum objectives and goals outlines in the lesson plans.
  • Comply with all procedures, guidelines, and policies of the school at all times.
  • Maintain a professional attitude in all manner of conduct with students, faculty, and parents, including a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ensure a sustainable relationship with parents, pupils, school personnel and members of the public by communicating in a confidential, polite and refined manner.
  • Reports to the principal or school secretary upon arrival at the school.
  • Maintains, as fully possible, the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
  • Consults, as appropriate, with the principal or department or grade level head, before initiating any teaching or other procedures not specified in the lesson plans.
  • Uses appropriate judgement to act in the best interest of students at all times.
  • Complies with all District Customer Service policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor or administrator.
  • Works with students to help reinforce learning objectives.
  • Maintains a classroom environment which promotes active learning.
  • Serves as a responsible role model in appearance and conduct.
  • Adheres to all health, safety, and sanitation policies of the school district and notifies the proper authorities when repairs or replacements are required in order to maintain established standards.
  • Demonstrates cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned by school administration.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Other tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the immediate supervisor, the principal and/or the Superintendent.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.

  • Ability to follow requirements, rules, and regulations as set forth in the Substitute handbook.
  • Ability to follow requirements, rules, and regulations as set forth by Board Policy.
  • Ability to remain “on-call” and be available as needed.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions and job task requirements.
  • Detail oriented and able to follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Able to cultivate relationships with students in a brief time period.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving light furniture may be required.

Equipment/Material Handled:

Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, all multimedia equipment including current technology.

Safety and Health:

  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
  • Knowledge of first aid preferred.

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

  • Every person, including any school employee, licensed or unlicensed, who has information that is not privileged as a matter of law and who knows or has a reasonable suspicion that a child is abused or neglected shall immediately make a report to the New Mexico Child Abuse Hotline (1-855-333-SAFE or #SAFE from a cell phone), a local law enforcement agency, the Children, Youth and Families Department office in the county where the child resides, or a tribal law enforcement or social services agency for an Indian child residing in Indian country. Any employee who knowingly fails to report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by 30-6-4 NMSA 1978 may be subject to criminal penalties, disciplinary action, up to and including the discharge or termination of employment. Similarly, any employee who knowingly fails to report suspected sexual exploitation of a student or another employee engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student beyond the boundaries expected for an employee-student relationship may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including the discharge or termination of employment.
  • Employees are responsible for the proper care, use, and safeguarding of all School District facilities, equipment, vehicles, property, records, keys, identification badges, technology devices, and materials entrusted to their custody or control. Upon voluntary or involuntary separation from his or her employment, employees shall immediately return all School District property as directed. Failure to return any and all School District property to which the employee was responsible for or returning it in damaged condition, excluding normal wear and tear from use, may result in payroll deductions as permitted by law, civil recovery efforts, disciplinary action, and/or referral to law enforcement when appropriate. By executing this Contract for employment, the employee acknowledges and agrees to the payroll deduction for missing or damaged School District property at his or her separation from employment and knowingly waives any right to the payment of salary under any and all wage laws taken from the final payment for missing and/or damaged School District property.
