Job Description

Position: Substitute Custodian

Supervisor: Assistant Principal/Principal

General Job Description: To provide a clean and safe learning environment for students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior.

  • Maintain behavior appropriate to performing and accomplishing assigned duties.
  • Know what to do to successfully complete assigned work.
  • Project over-all concern for personal appearance as it relates to job performance.
  • Carry out assignments and instructions from supervisor(s) in a competent and efficient manner
  • Clean interior of assigned school building.
  • Maintain exterior of buildings and grounds in such a manner so they are free of trash and debris.
  • Water and care for lawn areas as directed.
  • Report electrical and mechanical problems of the building to the Maintenance Office.
  • Order, stock and maintain adequate levels of supplies in the building.
  • Assume responsibility for building security.
  • Assume responsibility for fire and safety of the building.
  • Perform emergency minor repair and cleaning as necessary.
  • Maintain a safe environment for staff and students.
  • Wear protective gear as directed when cleaning up bodily fluids.
  • Respond to the needs of the Principal and staff of the building.
  • Use all chemicals exactly as directed by container labels.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform manual physical labor, lifting and moving materials, furniture, equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain assigned uniforms, equipment, tools and custodial closets in operable, safe and attractive status.
  • Account for supplies, materials, and equipment as required.
  • Complete records and reports and required in a timely manner.
  • Maintain facilities security.
  • Shovel snow and keep walkways clear of ice.
  • Use technology for management to possibly include work orders, emails, etc.
  • Perform and other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, principal, and/or Superintendent.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to work with large numbers of co-workers, students, and staff and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Preferred experience in custodial work or related field.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license for operating vehicles of the size required of this position.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements:
  • Physical ability to do manual labor for eight (8) hours per day.
  • Standing, driving, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting and climbing ladders. Lifting from floor to mid-thigh maximum (50 pounds) occasionally. Lifting from mid-thigh to shoulder maximum (50 pounds) occasionally. Lifting from shoulders to overhead (40 pounds) occasionally, carrying (50 pounds) maximum occasionally. Lifting more than 50 pounds of dead weight should be done by at least two people.
  • Work overhead, in tight areas, off of ladders, at floor level (on knees).
  • Hand/eye coordination, normal range of sight.
  • Ability to move and operate vacuums, buffers, and other custodial related equipment.
  • Work safely from ladders.
  • Ability to move furniture.
  • Fingering or otherwise working with fingers.
Safety and Health Requirements:
  • Proper posture is required to eliminate acute and chronic low back pain.
  • Wear protective devices such as eyewear, non-skid pads on shoes, as job conditions demand.
  • Read, understand, and observe all precautions and proper methods of use on all chemicals, equipment, tools and materials.
  • Complete all required training.
  • Acquire and apply knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
Equipment/Material Handled:

Hand tools, equipment chemicals, vacuums, buffers, platforms, and materials particular to this trade skill.

Work Environment:

The work environment varies greatly in the place of work from working in a building alone to working in school facilities with large numbers of people. Conditions range from working outside in the extreme heat of the summer, to comfortable building, to working outside in very cold temperatures of the winter. Work schedule will depend on assignment. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Must be able to work under stressful conditions. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine.

Any employee who knowingly fails to report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by 30-6-4 NMSA 1978 may be subject to criminal penalties, disciplinary action, up to and including the discharge or termination of employment. Similarly, any employee who knowingly fails to report suspected sexual exploitation of a student or another employee engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student beyond the boundaries expected for an employee-student relationship may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including the discharge or termination of employment.
