The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a full-time Substitute Teacher for the 2025-26 academic year. We are a Preschool - 8 progressive, independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with an enrollment of 410 students. Since our founding in 1972, TPS has grown in size, complexity, and diversity, rooted in progressive values such as immersive learning, responsive pedagogy, and meaningful engagement with the world.

Summary

TPS seeks a creative, collaborative educator interested in progressive education and social justice, committed to personal and professional growth. The role involves curriculum integration, student observation, and co-teaching. As a Substitute Teacher, you will impact student lives by providing instruction, guidance, and fostering a positive learning environment where students can thrive daily.

The hours are Monday - Friday, generally 8am - 4pm.

Responsibilities

• Provide coverage for teacher absences in homeroom and special subjects such as Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education.
• Support classroom management and transitions as needed, floating across classes per division directives.
• Assist with outdoor education days.
• Facilitate student transition to After-school Programming (3-4pm).
• Offer developmentally appropriate learning experiences for Preschool-8 students.
• Maintain a safe, positive, and conducive learning environment.
• Manage classroom behavior and uphold school policies.
• Adapt teaching methods and materials to individual needs.
• Collaborate with supervisors to develop teaching skills.
• Communicate effectively with staff and administration regarding student progress and classroom issues.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
• 1-3 years of experience working with children in educational settings.
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly to various teaching environments and grade levels.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with classroom technology.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Reliable attendance, punctuality, flexibility, and willingness for last-minute assignments.
