Job description

General Position Description

The Substitute Teacher provides flexible classroom support on an as-needed basis when additional coverage is needed due to staff absences, schedule changes, breaks, or other center needs. This position requires adaptability, reliability, and the ability to step into different classrooms while maintaining a safe, nurturing, and consistent environment for children.

Substitute Teachers may work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, or school-age children depending on center needs, experience, and qualifications. Substitute Teachers collaborate with classroom staff and the Center Director to support daily routines, supervision, child engagement, and the center’s standards of quality care.

Substitute Teachers are contacted when shifts are available based on their stated availability. Providing availability does not guarantee hours, and substitutes are not required to remain available unless they have accepted a specific shift.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide classroom support as assigned in infant, toddler, preschool, or school-age classrooms.

  • Assist in maintaining established classroom routines, schedules, and expectations.

  • Actively supervise and engage with children during play, meals, rest time, transitions, outdoor play, and classroom activities.

  • Support children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development through positive interactions.

  • Assist with hands-on care, including feeding, diapering, toileting, handwashing, and self-help skills as needed.

  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment.

  • Follow all health, safety, supervision, and licensing requirements.

  • Communicate effectively with classroom teachers and center leadership.

  • Follow direction from Lead Teachers, Assistant Directors, and the Center Director.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.

  • Assist with meals, snacks, cleaning tasks, and classroom preparation as needed.

  • Report concerns regarding child safety, behavior, illness, injury, or classroom needs to appropriate staff.

  • Report on time and complete any accepted shift unless excused by management.

  • Adhere to all center policies, procedures, and state regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different classrooms, age groups, and daily routines.

  • Strong supervision skills and attentiveness to child safety.

  • Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude when working with children and staff.

  • Ability to follow instructions and classroom expectations.

  • Strong communication skills with children, families, and coworkers.

  • Dependability and professionalism when accepting scheduled shifts.

  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a classroom team.

  • Understanding of appropriate interactions with young children.

  • Willingness to assist with a variety of classroom and care-related tasks.

Education & Experience
  • Experience working with children in a licensed childcare setting preferred.

  • Experience with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, or school-age children preferred.

  • Certification in pediatric first aid and CPR preferred or willingness to obtain.

  • Must pass required background checks.

  • Must complete required health assessment, including negative TB test, as applicable.

  • Must complete required orientation and training.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to engage in active care and supervision, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, sitting on the floor, and participating in children’s activities.

  • Ability to lift and carry children as needed.

  • Ability to assist with diapering, toileting, meals, cleaning, and classroom transitions.

  • Comfortable working in a busy childcare environment with exposure to common childhood illnesses.

  • Ability to supervise children indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
