Job summary

The Fort Madison Community School District is seeking a Special Education Associate to provide support to certified teachers and staff, assisting in instruction, supervision, and care for students, especially those with special needs. Responsibilities

  • Establish supportive relationships with students, staff and others involved in the work.
  • Follow classroom expectations from multiple teachers and building administration.
  • Provide academic assistance in reading, writing and math.
  • Assist teachers and students in classrooms, small groups and one-on-one.
  • Support students with special needs according to IEPs.
  • Supervise and maintain discipline in classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, bus area, playgrounds and arrival/dismissal zones.
  • Assist with student behavior management and encourage appropriate conduct as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism regarding students, staff, and families.
  • Be supportive in the learning environment while upholding student dignity and respect.
  • Complete required district training.
  • Model appropriate language and behavior and ensure students adhere to school expectations.
  • Pay attention to student behaviors, interests and needs to tailor instruction.
  • Ensure safety and well-being by following emergency procedures during drills and emergencies.
  • Be able to work patiently with maturing students and varying learning paces.
  • Be able to commit to consistently accepted substitute assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Special Education Associate provides essential support to certified teachers and staff by assisting in the instruction, supervision, and care of students, particularly those with special needs.


This role helps create a supportive, safe, and engaging learning environment through academic and behavioral support in both group and individual settings.


This current need for student support will be hired as an ongoing substitute as long as responsibilities are continually met.


A positive and encouraging attitude can greatly impact a child's learning experience and overall wellbeing.



Key Responsibilities


  • Establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students, staff and other scontacted in the course of the work.

  • Follow classroom expectations from multiple teachers and building expectations from administration.

  • Provide academic assistance in reading, writing and math.

  • Assist teachers and students in classrooms, small groups and one-on-one.

  • Support students with special needs according to IEP's.

  • Supervise and maintain discipline in various settings including classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, bus area, playgrounds, congested areas and arrival/dismissal zones.

  • Assist with student behavior management and encourage appropriate conduct following the lead of certified teacher or building administration.

  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism regarding students, staff, and families.

  • Be supportive in the learning environment while maintaining the dignity and respect of the student.

  • Complete required district training.

  • Model appropriate language and behavior, ensuring that all students adhere to the school's expectations for being respectful.

  • Pay close attention to student behaviors, interests, and individual needs to allow educators to tailor their instruction and provide appropriate support.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students by executing school emergency procedures and protocols effectively during drills and real emergencies.

  • Must be able to work patiently with maturing students, as they often have varying learning paces, and may display impulsive or reactive behaviors.

  • Must be able to be able to consistently keep accepted substitute assignments.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications


  • Minimum-High school diploma, Associate degree preferred

Pay: $14.50 per hour



Physical Requirements


  • Work is primarily performed in classrooms and school facilities

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and moderate lifting/pushing/pulling
