Job summary

The Fort Madison Community School District is seeking a Substitute School Nurse to provide temporary health services when the regular nurse is unavailable. You will support student safety, administer medications per orders, and follow district emergency procedures and FERPA/HIPAA guidelines.

This on-call, on-site role requires current Iowa RN or LPN licensure, CPR/BLS and First Aid, and Mandatory Reporter certification. Prior school nursing or pediatric/public health experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Upholds district health policies related to student health, safety, and confidentiality.
  • Maintains confidential health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Monitors health conditions impacting learning; follows health plans and care plans.
  • Administers medication per physician orders and district policy.
  • Provides first aid and emergency care; staff and student health support during drills and emergencies.

Job description

The Substitute School Nurse provides temporary health services to students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse. The position ensures that school health programs and emergency procedures are implemented according to Iowa Department of Education and Department of Public Health guidelines.

Requirements
  • Current Iowa Board Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse with valid Iowa licensure
  • Current CPR/BLS and First Aid Certification
  • Mandatory Reporter Certification
  • Experience in school nursing, pediatric, or public health preferred
Job Description
  • Upholds school district health policies related to student health, safety, and confidentiality.
  • Maintains accurate and complete confidential health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Monitors specific health conditions, which can have an impact on learning.
  • Follows the Individual Health Plan to assist all school staff in meeting student's health needs.
  • Follows the plan of care and health needs of Health plans are listed in the nurse binder with student health files.
  • Monitors for outbreaks of infectious and or communicable Works with appropriate public health agencies when necessary.
  • Provides first aid and emergency care when needed.
  • Follow district protocols for accident, injury, and illness documentation.
  • Administers medication listed by school nurse and documented on the medication administration record in compliance with district policy and physician orders.
  • If necessary consults with administration, parent/guardian and school personnel to keep the school informed about pertinent health problems and needs of students.
  • Supervises the administration of health services by non-licensed personnel as appropriate if necessary.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students by executing school emergency procedures and protocols effectively during drills and real emergencies.
  • Monitors, treats employees with injuries.
  • Support students' physical and emotional well-being during the school day.
  • Follows the nurse schedule shared with the substitute nurse along with PowerSchool.
  • Reports to building administration.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: As needed, on an on-call basis during the regular school year when the assigned school nurse is unavailable.

Physical Requirements: Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking. Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Pay: $145 per day as a sub nurse
