Job Title

Substitute Nurse

Purpose of the Position

We are seeking qualified individuals who are eager and available to serve as a substitute nurse. School nursing protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses are leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student‑centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise health duties delegated to health associates, para‑professionals, associates and secretaries.
  • Provide standard of care, including assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation for student health conditions.
  • Uphold the standards of professional nursing performance, including quality of care, performance appraisal, education, collegiality, ethics, collaboration, research, resource utilization, communication, program management and health education.
  • Provide essential and emergency nursing service to the district’s students.
  • Maintain a reliable attendance record.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of security and emergency procedures.

  • Knowledge of district operations.
  • Ability to organize varied tasks and meet deadlines timely.
  • Ability to handle diversity objectively.
  • Ability to interpret federal, state, and local codes and maintain compliance.
  • Ability to use computer software.
Education, Certification and Experience
  • Education: RN or BSN.
  • Certification/Licensure: RN licensed in the State of Iowa.
  • Experience: School and/or community experience preferred.
Equipment
  • Office equipment such as computers, two‑way radios, multi‑line phone system, cell phone, copier, and fax machines.
Physical Requirements
  • Repetitious bending, lifting, and hand movement.
  • Ability to work while standing, moving and/or walking.
  • Drug, tobacco, and alcohol‑free while working.
  • Must be able to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.
Working Conditions
  • Majority of work performed in an office or school setting.
  • Occasional meetings outside the school day.
  • Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials and emergency situations.
Terms of Employment
  • At‑Will Employee.
  • Per Board Policies and administrative guidelines.
Compensation

Substitute nurses earn $165 per day or $82.50 per half day. After 50 days of substitution, pay increases to $185 per day or $92.50 per half day (resets at the start of each school year).
