Job Description

Title: Substitute School Nurse

Reports To: Building and District Administration

Description: Provide healthcare to students, perform health screenings, and coordinate referrals to medical, home or private health care providers. Serve as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for healthcare and a healthy school environment.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of students
  • Provide quality healthcare and services to students in need under the guidelines of school nursing
  • Provide leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment
  • Actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning
  • Administer medication in compliance with medical orders and State guidelines
  • Supervise, monitor and evaluate health paraprofessional
  • Screen for illness, authorize exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious diseases
  • Follow laws and regulations regarding reporting abuse and neglect, and illnesses to proper authorities
  • Maintain current records, activity logs, progress reports, treatment plans and all other necessary files
  • Comply with professional, ethical and legal codes of conduct, standards for Nurses as outlined by the Connecticut Department of Health and Connecticut State Department of Education
  • Use mandatory assessments, professional evaluations and assessments to evaluate students
  • Attend in-services as required
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, education and conversation
  • Maintain strict confidence concerning personnel, students and operational concerns of the district
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a role model for students and staff
  • Interact with students and staff and promote overall wellness
  • Respond to questions and offer support in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Create and maintain a professional and approachable atmosphere for all
  • Perform related duties as assigned by administration
Qualifications
  • Valid State of Connecticut RN license issued by the Connecticut Department of Health
  • 3-5 years of experience preferred
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid and AED
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or Board of Education may find appropriate
  • Ability to meet physical job requirements including computer work, electronic and written charting and notes, lift, push and/or pull various supplies and/or equipment up to maximum of 20 pounds, assisting students with ADL skills and positioning
  • Ability to complete work with frequent interruptions
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills and ability to work effectively with others
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent public relations skills
  • Proficient knowledge of federal, state, and local laws including the Connecticut State Department of Education governing special education
