Position Overview

St. Michael's Country Day School (SMCDS), an independent Toddler through Grade 8 school in Newport, Rhode Island, is seeking a qualified and dependable Substitute School Nurse to provide coverage for the School Nurse as needed throughout the 2026-2027 school year.

The Substitute School Nurse supports the health, safety, and well-being of students and employees during the school day and provides appropriate nursing care in accordance with school policies, established health procedures, and applicable Rhode Island requirements.

This is an as-needed, per diem position and is ideal for a licensed nurse seeking flexible school-day hours.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to students who become ill or injured during the school day.
• Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate care, including when a student should return to class, be sent home, or require additional medical attention.
• Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, school policies, and applicable regulations.
• Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
• Follow student Individualized Health Care Plans, Emergency Action Plans, allergy/anaphylaxis plans, asthma plans, and other established health protocols.
• Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of student visits, medications administered, injuries, illnesses, and other health-related matters.
• Communicate with parents/guardians, faculty, staff, administrators, and emergency personnel as appropriate.
• Provide first aid and basic emergency care to students and employees when needed.
• Monitor students with known health conditions and follow established care instructions.
• Maintain student health information and confidentiality in accordance with applicable privacy requirements and school policies.
• Follow SMCDS procedures related to communicable illness, infection prevention, and student return-to-school requirements.
• Maintain a safe, organized, welcoming, and supportive Health Office environment.
• Perform other health and safety-related duties as reasonably assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

• Current Rhode Island Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
• Current CPR/AED certification; BLS certification preferred.
• Experience working with children or adolescents preferred.
• School nursing, pediatric, emergency, urgent care, or community health experience is a plus.
• Ability to independently assess common childhood illnesses and injuries and respond appropriately to emergencies.
• Knowledge of medication administration, allergies/anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, and other common student health needs.
• Strong communication, organization, judgment, and documentation skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling student and family health information.
• A calm, caring, and professional approach when working with children, families, faculty, and staff.

Employment is contingent upon completion of all required background checks and other employment requirements applicable to SMCDS employees.

Schedule

This is a per diem/as-needed substitute position during the 2026-2027 academic year. Coverage needs may include planned absences as well as occasional short-notice coverage during regular school hours.

There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours or days.
