Job summary

Occidental College's Child Development Center seeks a Substitute Preschool Teacher to cover in classrooms for ages 2-5. This on-call, part-time role supports Lead teachers, with 11 months duration and potential extension. Qualifications

  • 35% assist with general classroom and Center-wide duties and record-keeping.
  • 10% nurture communication with parents and positive classroom environment.
  • 15% assist with curriculum implementation and daily activities setup/cleanup.

Job Summary

The Substitute Preschool Teacher at Occidental College ChildDevelopment Center is responsible for collaborating with LeadPreschool Teachers and other teachers to facilitate daily classroomoperations and supervision of children aged 2-5 years old. Thison-call position involves stepping in to cover teaching roles whenteachers are absent. The Substitute Preschool Teacher must have theability to work effectively and collaboratively within a team ofearly childhood educators. Flexibility is required, becauseSubstitutes are required to serve in various classrooms and supportvarious ages, based on Center needs. The Substitute PreschoolTeachers should contribute to fostering a safe, respectful, andcommunity-oriented classroom environment and have the ability toform nurturing relationships with children and communicateeffectively with parents, as needed. Essential qualificationsinclude a minimum of 12 units in Child Development, experienceworking in a preschool classroom setting, a basic understanding ofChild Development theories, and effective communicationskills.

Job Duties
  • 40% - Child Supervision and Care: - Provide constantsupervision of children and attend to their physical and emotionalneeds; ensure children’s safety and well-being. - (Essential)
  • 35% - Assist in General Classroom and Center-wide Duties -Share responsibility for completing general classroom andCenter-wide duties, including keeping Center clean and safe.Contribute to the smooth operation of the Center and assistteachers and children in all groups, as needed. Respond receptivelyto direction from Lead Preschool Teachers, other teachers, andDirector. Assume Lead Preschool Teacher duties, as needed. Completeroutine paperwork and administer medications, as needed. -(Essential)
  • 10% - Relationships and Communication - Provide nurturing andresponsive care to children, establish open and respectfulcommunication with parents, and contribute to a positive,community-oriented classroom environment. - (Marginal)
  • 15% - Assist with Curriculum Implementation - Work with LeadPreschool Teachers and other teachers to implement adevelopmentally-appropriate, play-based curriculum. Assist withset-up, implementation, and clean-up of daily activities for thechildren. - (Essential)
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 12 semester units in Child Development - whichmust include the 3 core courses of: a basic Child Growth and
  • Development course, a course on Child, Family and Community,and a course on planning Curriculum for young children.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working in a play-based earlychildhood education setting.
  • Understanding of basic Child Development theories and currentbest practices in Early Childhood Education.
  • Familiarity with developmentally-appropriate, play-based,emergent curriculum models.
  • Strong understanding of the specific educational philosophy ofthe Child Development Center.
  • Familiarity with Title 22 Regulations.
  • Understanding of procedures for completing accident/incidentreports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 18 or more units in Child Development - which must include the3 core courses of: a basic Child Growth and Development course, acourse on Child, Family and Community, and a course on planningCurriculum for young children.
  • 2 or more years of experience working in a play-based earlychildhood education setting. Experience working in a program thatutilizes an emergent curriculum.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $20.00/hr-#23.00/hr
