Job summary

The Philadelphia School in Philadelphia, PA is seeking per-diem substitute teachers for Preschool through Grade 8 at our progressive, independent campus. We value immersive learning, responsive pedagogy, and meaningful engagement with the world, and we rely on substitutes to maintain continuity of learning when regular teachers are absent.

Substitutes collaborate with faculty to deliver developmentally appropriate lessons, maintain a safe and inclusive environment, and adapt to a range of grades

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Required instead would be an equivalent combination of education and previous experience that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Experienced educator who has a strong classroom management and communication skill, as well as flexible approach to teaching.

Responsibilities

• Deliver developmentally appropriate lessons in homeroom and special subject areas—including Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education—based on plans prepared by the regular classroom teacher.
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom atmosphere that aligns with the school’s educational philosophy and values.
• Effectively teach and manage students ranging from Preschool through Grade 8, demonstrating flexibility and understanding of different developmental stages.
• Provide supervision and support during outdoor education experiences or class trips, ensuring student safety and engagement.
• Follow school policies and collaborate with fellow educators and administrators to ensure continuity of learning and a smooth classroom experience in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Provide coverage overlapping with after-school programming, with hours to be adjusted (and paid) as needs must with after-school programming
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

We are a Preschool - Grade 8 progressive, independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of approximately 420 students. Since our founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School has grown in size, complexity, and diversity.
