Job summary

Edmonds School District seeks substitute paraeducators to support students across 34 school sites, providing supervision, tutoring and instructional assistance as needed.

Positions are on-call with varying hours; benefits are described and eligibility follows district guidelines. Applicants must meet age and qualification requirements and may be considered for waivers for non-Title I funded schools.

Qualifications

  • Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Meet one of the following education/experience options for paraeducators as described by the district: an associate degree or higher, 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits, an approved paraeducator apprenticeship, or a PESB assessment passing score.
  • Human Resources may waive the requirements listed above on a case-by-case basis for non-Title I funded schools.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise students in classroom, recess, and outdoor settings.
  • Provide 1:1 or small group support, tutoring and activity facilitation.
  • Assist teachers with classroom management, safety, and observation reporting.

Education

Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher
Completed apprenticeship as a paraeducator (Washington State registered program)
PESB approved assessments passing score

Position Information

This in-person role fills in for vacancies across 34 school sites, working directly with students to ensure their academic and social success.

  • PARA I (CLASSROOM/RECESS/GENERAL ED/RESOURCE): Typically outdoors, monitoring students, awareness of safety and equipment use. Supervise and conduct small groups in educational, creative, and structured play activities. Assist with class work and assignments. Tutor and monitor student activities in the classroom and special activities. Monitor student behavior and progress and share observations with teacher and other professional staff. Typically works 1:1 with an individual student. You may be helping in classrooms, restroom breaks, lunch periods, and/or recess.
  • PARA IA: Typical works collaboratively with students/staff in an intensive learning support classroom, special education classrooms, Pre-K classrooms, or other learning environments. These positions may serve as a crossing guard as well.
  • PARA IB: Typical works with students/staff in an intensive learning support classroom, special education classrooms or other K-12 learning environments. Manages challenging student behaviors in a non-escalating, positive manner. Assist teacher in daily management, organization, monitoring, and safety of students. May require feeding, diapering, toileting students with disabilities and/or monitoring of medical conditions. Follow all teachers' guidelines and instructions for room structure.
Guest Position

This role involves various shift times and operates on an on-call basis depending on vacancies. Work hours, including start and end times, are subject to change based on district needs. Please note that substitute employment is 'at-will,' and there is no guaranteed minimum of hours or days per week.

Hourly Rate

$21.15 - $24.75 (Depending on assignment type)

Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • In addition, a paraeducator must meet one of the following:

1. Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
2. Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university
3. Completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
4. Received a passing score on one of the PESB approved assessments.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for extensive periods of time. Frequently required to use hands to handle or feel. Frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, or bend. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds (books, files, learning resources, equipment, etc.) on a regular basis. Exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens. This position may have interaction with groups of students with complex needs and challenging behaviors. Must be able to withstand physical and emotional stress. Required to lift, position, and/or move students on a regular basis. Examples include lifting and positioning physically impaired students in and out of a vehicle, wheelchair, pool, therapy equipment, etc., depending on the assignment type.

The Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) provides access to health care services. Our benefits are provided to eligible positions through SEBB (School Employees Benefits Board). Eligibility for SEBB state health insurance coverage is determined by working 630 hours during the school year.
