Job summary

Mabton School District in Mabton, WA is seeking a Substitute Para-Educator (SPED) to support students with Special Education needs. The role involves assisting certified staff, reinforcing learning, and supervising students in various settings.

Qualifications

  • Current First Aid/CPR card.
  • Current physical examination document.

Responsibilities

  • Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning.
  • Assists certified staff with strategies based on students' needs.
  • Alerts staff to problems or information about a student.
  • Supervises students during lunch, play, and field trips.
  • Maintains confidentiality and ethical behavior.
  • Participates in in-service training as approved.
  • Assists in integrated settings as determined by IEP/Title I/ESL teams.
  • Provide instruction and supervision to students with disabilities under the SPED teacher.
  • Assist children with toileting, feeding, and hygiene needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Experience with sign language desired.

Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: SubstitutePara-Educator (SPED) - SPED

Directly Responsible To: Special Education Director and Building Principal

Description of Responsibilities:
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff.
  • Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Alerts the certified staff to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Performs assigned supervision of students during lunch periods, play periods, and on field trips.
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
  • Participates in in-service training programs as approved.
  • Assists as directed by certified staff in the effort to successfully maintain students with special needs in an integrated setting, as determined by the IEP / Title 1 / ESL Team(s).
  • Provide instruction and supervision to students with disabilities under the supervision of the special education teacher.
  • Assist children with toileting, feeding and hygiene needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Experience with sign Langauge desired
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education or
  • Associates Degree (or higher) or
  • Successful completion of ParaPro Assessment (ETS)
  • Current First Aid/CPR card.
  • Current physical examination that demonstrates minimum functional capacity to perform duties of the job
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supervising and instructing children.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English - preferred

6.5 Hrs a day

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

MENTAL DEMANDS

Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service-oriented manner. May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Amount of standing, sitting, walking, bending, and twisting will vary depending on the age of students and classroom assignments. Physical capabilities also require lifting and carrying (no more than 50 lbs.) pushing and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and significant finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires approximately 35% sitting, 35% walking, and 30% standing. Maintaining good hygiene is essential.
