Job summary

Southeast Polk Community School District is seeking a Substitute School Nurse for the 2026-2027 school year in Altoona, IA. The role supports student health by providing nursing care, maintaining health records, and guiding staff in health screenings.

Responsibilities include observing students, assisting in health program development, and acting in the absence of a physician to care for ill or injured individuals. Strong emphasis on health and well-being within the school community.

Qualifications

• RN certification is required.
• First aid and CPR certificates are preferred.
• Experience and/or training with youth is preferred.
• Alternative qualifications may be accepted as deemed appropriate by the Board of Education.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing school health program.
• Observe students regularly to detect health needs.
• Instruct teachers on screening students for health defects.
• Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records for all students.
• Report health matters to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies.
• In the absence of a physician, assume authority for care of students or staff with injury or emergency illness.
• Administer first aid per established procedures.
• Make health recommendations for individual students.
• Implement Board policy on exclusion and readmission related to infectious diseases.
• Assist staff in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
• Other duties as assigned.

4. Such alternative to the above qualification as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Building Principals

Supervises: Students, Assigned Classified Aides

Job Goal: To be a team member providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for all students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in Southeast Polk; to be a part of the district dedicated to being an innovative, educational organization committed to providing learning experiences of superior quality which enable ALL students to successfully meet challenges now and in the future.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Assist in developing school health program.
2. Observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
