Job Description
Title: Substitute Health Aide
Qualifications
  • Minimum of High School Diploma required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one-year experience as a CNA or EMT required.
  • Possess a valid CNA certification and obtain it throughout employment.
  • Successful completion of physical, criminal background and child abuse registry check, and pre‑work screening at the time of hire.
  • Experience working in an educational setting; ability to understand student behavior with diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Ability to obtain required training, including but not limited to state‑approved medication certificate, American Heart or Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to make decisions within provided guidelines.
  • Ability to use and understand basic technology and computer programs.
Job Goal

To assist the nurse in achieving a harmonious nurse’s office and provide help to meet the needs of the at‑risk child in areas including, but not limited to: health screening, nutrition, home and school‑related issues, wellness, health education, counseling, drug and alcohol abuse, and human growth and development.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Work as a team member with the nurse.
  • Relate effectively and appropriately with students and parents.
  • Follow school health procedures and policies.
  • Maintain health and welfare of children.
  • Give medications and keep records.
  • Encourage children to be as independent as possible about their own health care.
  • Assist with health/at‑risk services.
  • Receive and direct phone calls.
  • Type, file and record information.
  • Follow procedures in emergency situations.
  • Request assistance from the school nurse and counselor.
  • Aware of and knowledgeable of services available to at‑risk students and families.
  • Provide an appropriate role model for the students.
  • Maintain confidentiality on sensitive information.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
  • Must be capable of standing throughout the work day.
  • Must present appropriate appearance and personal cleanliness suited to working in close proximity to school‑age children and adults.
  • Must be able to work with interruptions during a work shift.
  • Must be capable of working with students with different personalities, capabilities, and physical and mental limitations.
  • Must be willing to come into contact with body fluids such as urine and feces, blood and nasal secretions and contagious diseases such as flu and the common cold.
  • Must be capable of using cleaning and sanitizing chemicals with appropriate care.
  • Must have physical dexterity in limbs and digits necessary to physically interact with children in a school setting.

Note: The physical demands described above represent real‑life tasks an employee may need to perform as part of the essential functions of this job. While the frequency may be low, the above stated physical demands may be required during the course of a daily work shift. Tasks that have physical demands that exceed the above stated limits should only be performed with sufficient manpower or material handling equipment.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Southeast Polk Board Policy.
